Not Sure Which To Buy?
« on: January 22, 2006, 11:18:36 pm »
Hi,

I am looking to purchase one of the C series Zuarus units.
One of the main things I'd like to get into is using the unit for GPS purposes.
I'd like to have the unit in my car as I drive etc...
I live in Toronto Canada which I think may make it hard to find maps.
firstly, Would I be able to get the unit to work as a GPS with Canadian maps?
Secondly, Should I get the 3100 for it's disk space or could I get away with a 1000 as it is cheaper.
I'd like to use the unit for other things as well such as a normal PDA, wireless laptop at home and one day maybe a GSM phone if possible but not that important.
Anyway, some help here would be great.

thanks in advance.
C1000 running pdaXrom R198 SP8.
1G Kingston Ultimate 133x SD
256M Kingston SD
Ambicom WL1100C Wifi
Symbol 802.11b Wifi

Another Torontonian ... hi!

Sorry I cannot help you with that decision ... GPS is not my thing, I just use cycling maps of Southern Ontario, and travel slowly enough that I can figure out where I am from those. I'm getting a C1000 to replace my 5500.

Hello,

I can't help you with the Canadian maps, but here are some things to consider.

For one, you'll probably be using a CF card GPS. That means that one memory card slot is taken up.

Now, if you get the 3100, you can store the maps - which can be quite large - on the built-in drive. If you get the 1000, your only real option is an SD card.

However, the Zaurus will only use cards up to 1 gig at the moment. I read someone's working on getting a 2 gig card working, but I doubt it's ready yet. Also, if you install the maps there, there's less room for extra programs, movies or MP3's and whatnot.

Bottom line: If you don't plan to watch movies or listen to MP3's and won't be doing serious programming, the 1000 is a good buy. The price difference between the two buys you the GPS, a case and an SD card.

I am currently on the look out for a Z, any of the 6000 or C3X00, and first of I didnt liked the clamshell design, so I thought that the 6000 would be good enugh, and if I were to mod in bluetooth, I would be having myself a nice little geek tool.
But then, when I realised how hard it would be to find a 6k for a decent price, and when I read up on the c3100 and the fact that the HDD is exchangable for a CF (and the fact that 4gb flash is cheaper than 4gb CF HDD - at least here in Sweden) I thought that hey, music goes on the HDD (which can be upgraded for 8gb or more further down the road) and sensitive data (school work, that kind of stuff) goes on a 1gb SD card, I thought that heck, battery time might be less but the keyboard is more indeed, and the weight difference is not that large between c1000 and c3x00 either...

Anyways, to make a long (obviously) story short, Im leaning towards a c3100 these days...

I don't understand why you think that your data is safer on an SD card?

The Zaurus operates the card in MMC compatibility mode, and doesn't use any of the security features of the SD system (in fact, I don't think I have ever come across anything which actually *uses* the secure part of Secure Digital flash memory!)

With new driver for SD card >1GB, Can C1000 + 4GB SD be the same as C3100 ?

If he prefers SD card to HDD he can go this way

I think he's thinking that: the MD is built in, it might break, and he can't easily get to it in daily use.

That's why I store files like that on an SD card as well - that way I can remove the card from the device if I need to, it's easier to move files to and from a PC with a card reader, and you can back it up independently of the Zaurus.

Makes sense to me
