I've A Colleague Going To Japan
« on: February 14, 2006, 04:52:30 pm »
I'm gonna retire my 760 into the hands of a mate, and replace it with a 3100 instead. Question is, how to get my mitts on it. I could buy from Figlabs and get the extra service. Or I could take the risk of a warranty problem and save the hundred quid or so by buying from PriceJapan.

Does anyone have any advice about the cost of buying in person? Is it any cheaper to buy a 3100 in person, rather than from the likes of PriceJapan?

Cheers,

Mike.

Actually, I think it is cheaper if you buy from pricejapan.  I bought mine IN PERSON in Akihabara  around new years and it cost me 63000 yen.

Prices seem to vary a lot in Akihabara. When I bought my C860, I looked at various places. In the big stores, like Laox, it was at least 6000 yen more than where I eventually bought, a place called Mobile something-or-other. As it is a colleague who is going to Japan, he may not be amenable to shop around, in which case PriceJapan might be the way to go.

It is a lot cheaper to buy through

http://www.kakaku.com/prdsearch/detail.asp...Key=00303010245 if you are in japan but you should understand some japanese to navigate on the site and read the terms and conditions

I bought mine for 57700 yen in january. Japanese delivery service is amazing. I received my zaurus in one day!!!

PriceJapan buys from the online shops in kakaku.com which offer the cheapest prices anywhere in Japan.
You won't get cheaper prices buying in person, and in terms of warranty service you'll be on your own.

I totally agree. It's one of the few public institutions in Japan that work so amazingly well.

So of course, in the true spirit of "fixing something that ain't broken", the Japanese government is going to privatise it...

Thanks for the replys. So it'll come down to a question of risk, and if I choose to take the risk of a warranty issue, I'll go with pricejapan.

Cheers,

Mike.

I think my earlier reply wasn't very clear.
What I meant was buying directly from a shop in Japan would leave you with no (easy) recourse in case you need to get repairs done.
At least with PriceJapan you have a contact point to send the Zaurus to, and they handle it from there, but of course you pay for all shipping charges.( this is my understanding of PriceJapan's warranty policy, you'll have to contact them to confirm)

ps: just to make it clear, I have absolutely no vested interests in PriceJapan, and have never bought anything from them before.

I've read a lot of good things about PriceJapan before I used them to purchase my C3100. I got mine less than a week ago.

PriceJapan is the way to go.

EDIT :

It took 3 business days to send it across the Pacific. ( to Victoria, Bc, Canada ) I ordered it straight off the website, through a form, then dealt with them through email for the remainder. I asked for a tracking number and was sent one in less than 24 hours. They are very professional about this.

My device arrived new without defect of any kind. This important, because sometimes crooked compaies send devices with dead pixels to places where returning the device is expensive. (They offload it on you.)

You have to pay shipping charges with PriceJapan and warranty, though.

Just go to Akihabara, there is a web site, sort of like pricewatch, that let's you find the cheapest place to buy electronics in Akihabara or walk just walk around.

I was in Tokyo a few weeks ago, and I bought 2 C3100 for friends, found them for Y575500, which is something like $500, from a place caled PC Select on the 2nd floor or some building. The C1000 was something like $300.

Remember it's 5% higher with a credit card order.

Oh, here's their web site http://pcselect.co.jp/

P.S. I just checked, it's Y33200 for C1000 right now, which according to Google is $283.

In the end I went with Price Japan.

I ordered on Wednesday evening, and they emailed be straight back to say it would be posted on Friday morning. I got it today. That's pretty good!

I'm not counting any chickens just yet, but it seems to have slipped through Customs without getting stopped for duty/VAT as well, which would be really nice!

Thanks everyone for your help.
