Pdax86 On Hard Drive
« on: March 31, 2006, 05:03:53 pm »
Is there a way to put pdaX86 onto the hard drive of a machine, instead of booting it from the CDROM?

Preferably a way to boot from the CD and then install it onto the hard drive from there.

Forgive me if this has been covered, I searched and didn't find anything.

Cool. One more question.

Experimenting with Virtual PC, I find that pdax86 dies a miserable death when the RAM is low. In some cases it just freezes during boot up, in others it seems to boot fine, but you can't log in. I think it wants about 96 megs. Is that right? Is there any way to get it going on a machine with less RAM than that?

I was wondering if it might be a good fit for any old laptop of mine, but it only has 40 megs of RAM.

I forget just how powerful the Zaurus really is.   I have plenty of full size systems that are not as powerful.

I didn't want to start a new topic, and this one seemed to be the most suitable one.

I burned a CD of the "updated" pdaX86 ISO and it just freezes my machine with a
black screen, right after the kernel decompresses, and the "Ready" appears.  The
older version I burned around March boots up OK, and I'm actually running it as I
post this.  I've got 256MB of RAM, does it need more perhaps?  I noticed there was 1
comment posted on the "image update" on the blog, but I can't read the comments
for some reason.

Before I burn another CD, I was wondering if there was something that I should know
about, or that I'm missing.

In addition, it would be cool to be able to easily install this to HD, in fact I tweaked the
XFConfig file to run in 1400x1050, and it is pretty sweet

Thanks for any info.  My first goal is to try to build the kernel for beta1/5500 and possibly
try to incorporate the patch (from OZ I think) that fixes the right-arrow (held down)
suspend issue.  I'm not sure I need to use the newer pdaX86 but I figured I'd try to
start with the latest.

If you copy the rootfs.bin from the CD to a FAT formatted partition in your computer .. you can create a persistant home. you then just need the CD as a bootloader, and can take it out once it's booted up. I'm using the beta3 image, off an external usb drive and it boots fine ... however windows doesn't like booting back up,  don't think the memory clears or something, it always needs to checks discs and since hte 'image' still resides in memory? sometimes windows acts quirky for a reboot or two untill it's overwritten.

Hi all!

Wondered if anyone had got any further with getting pdax86 onto the hard disk and maybe using less RAM.

Sure lots of us have clapped-out machines that would actually run it quite well as the sole OS. I have an old compaq legacy free ipaq (that doesn't look like a big beige box) that is screaming for a light/fast OS. Besides, would be nice to be able to double-up on any benefits I gain learning more about what I can do on/for my Z.

Any help appreciated!
