Rom Choice Poll?
« on: May 01, 2006, 12:41:06 am »
I think it would be interesting and informative to see a poll of how many people use which of the different ROMS that are available.

It might help newbies like me decide on one!

Is this something I can set up?

Thanks!

you can setup a poll quite easily, but note that each person can only vote once, so if they have multiple Zauri, then they can only vote for one of them unless you give permutations of every possibility in your poll which would then make it rather fragmented and not so usefull....

and what about those like me who switches very often between distros ?

I think, as a newbie you just HAVE TO try them all in order to decide, and also for sake of curiosity. It doesn't take much time to try them all, it SO easy. Just make a NAND backup of what you were on(say default SharpROM), flash with the new distro, and if you want to go back do a NAND restore. You will recover exactly the distro you were using with all customizations, documents, alarms, appointments.
No worries, no data loss, easy and fast(using CF is better for speed).
SL-C1000 from PriceJapan(cheap and very fast shipping) with EA-70 power adapter, iRiver USB Host cable, PDAIR case, pentopia stylus, ultra clear screen-protector from shop.brando.com.hk only $3 for shipping worldwide

"Sampling the Buffet" is  always a good thing... but I personally jumped  on the pdaXrom bandwagon from the time my Z got delivered and haven't jumped off...
My personal opinion if you are looking to use PIM as a primary and dont like the X look... OZ will prolly be your best option... Because there well built stable PIM setup

if PIM is needed but would like a X look... try pdaXrom and OZ and see which meets your needs best...

if you dont give a crap about PIM (like me) and just want a Pocket Linux Box... pdaXrom all the way...

A Poll would be a good thing just to see what current users use... but I would stand back because could predict a flame war...

PS. This is my opinion... Not Flaming...

It would be interesting to see the demographic, especially on a machine-by-machine basis.

I wonder if there are better (more flexible) ways to perform this particular survey than by using the poll function (and if you do decide on the poll, I'd get people to volunteer different 'Rom' types that you might not have thought/heard of.)

It would have been nice to see this over the past 3 years or so, too. I think OZ  has gained uers, and spread more evenly among platforms, and sharprom in particular has lost tremendously.
**3100 Zubuntu Jaunty,(working on Cacko dualboot), 16G A-Data internal CF, 4G SD, Ambicom WL-1100C Cf, linksys usb ethernet,  BelkinF8T020 BT card, Belkin F8U1500-E Ir kbd, mini targus usb mouse, rechargeble AC/DC powered USB hub, psp cables and battery extenders.

yeah, sharp rom is sorta stale. hardly any new software is made for it anymore except for the stuff that sharp commissions in japanese only for their loyal customers in japan.
so if you want new software, then you really need to switch to one of the alternate distros being developed. the problem seems to be that most the developers only have the older Z models and not many of them have the newer ones so supporting the newer models is lacking behind a bit, plus the newer models have slightly different hardware so updating the kernel to support the newer hardware without breaking existing features is a bit difficult too. ok, i won't mention the biggest problem hindering development progress...

This also goes in second direction - I used my SL-5500 for over year and then got c760 donated. Now 5500 is not used for most of time and I do not want waste to much time to support it...
