Pdaxrom 1.1.0beta 4 And New Bootloader
« Reply #165 on: August 02, 2006, 08:27:41 pm »
Just installed beta4 on my C31K.

Everything's good so far. I have a question though:

When I went into the diagnostic menu (M+D) and selected "NAND Flash Erase" I got an error after the flash was erased. It said there were 8 blocks and 1 was bad... That can't be good, right? I had OZ 3.5.4.1 before...

Ok, I've been playing around with the beta.  It think the obvious stuff has been reported.
However, when I went to fix the hideous sound issue with xmms, by running alsaconfig, I got:
Quote
Error opening terminal: rxvt.

rxvt under Beta4 also got this error whenever running other programs from within (or in a forked shell), such as nano and less. Earlier on I recompiled mrxvt and got this again, but when i changed the terminal name in .mrxvtrc from 'rxvt' (default in compilation) to others like 'xterm', mrxvt is fully functional again.

After a few days toying around with beta4 I have to say that calling it 'experimental' is an understatement, granted, having a 2. kernel is great, but almost nothing works the way it should, from wireless to cf/sd hotswapping - I even got segfaults while mounting & unmounting filesystems. Totally unusable.

I'm torn between beta3 and OZ 3.5.4.1 now...

Indeed it's not.

I really, really love pdaXrom (still think it's by far the best option in the Z world)...

Beta3 has been the best for me, so far. Almost 0 problems.

I'm thinking about going back to it...

Is there any chance the new CXX0 stuff makes it to the CXX00 in the foreseeable future?

I'm no expert but I doubt it very much. I get the feeling the main idea of beta 4 is to support the 2.6 kernel but I'm new round here so what do I know

I wonder whether there is anything new in recent CXX0 beta4. Perhaps it is simply the Cxx00 beta4 finally working for Cxx0? I asked in the Cxx0 beta4 thread and got no answer. Is there a changelog somewhere? I'd be interested if anyone has any information.

Out of interest what WM do you use? The incorrect window sizes in matchbox is really annoying and icewm looks ugly and doesn't seem to be any more or less responsive than matchbox. I had a quick play with WindowMaker after reading some posts about it and that looks quite nice, very familar (not that I know linux gui's that much).

Had a quick play with beta 4 but after spending the last couple of weeks playing musical chairs with ROMs I'd like to settle on one and start using my Z for what I intended!

In beta3 I use XFCE4 complete with plugins etc. It's great to use and fast too!

So far I've tried xfce, windowmaker, icewm, KDE. They all remedy the window sizing problem in matchbox. And they are all great window (and desktop) managers to play with!

In my experience, icewm feels very fast and responsive. I also don't like the default theme so I switch to one of the alternative themes. Plus Rox desktop (a a nice theme) I have even more goodies and eye candies.  And more fun of course!

Problem solved:
After I had gunzip'ped pdaXrom-1.1.0beta4-Kathrin-u-boot-akita-current.zip I found emergenc.img differed from the file Winzip had extracted.
BTW the green and orange leds both turned on when flashing via the "C" and "D" keys. The leds were lit not for 20s but only for about 10s.
The Z did not accept a  64 MB and 128 MB CF card, only a 1GB SD card.

Resetting: Taking the battery out and unplugging the power supply is one way. One can just push the reset button beside the battery compartment. It was meant for that.
I really appreciate to have a 2.6.16 kernel on this tiny machine. Still the emergency system only. But let's call it a day.
Many thanks to EVERYONE who contributes. I did spend a couple of bucks yesterday donating.

Frank

I've been working on getting the beta4 to work on my c3k for the past couple days now, and I still can't get the emergency system to boot (Bootup emergency system from http://mail.pdaxrom.org/node/78)  I'm sure that I've got the correct u-boot installing, and the orange and green lights come on for about ~14 seconds, so that seems ok, but then when I put the pdaXrom files on my CF card, put that in my Z,  and do the 'ON" + POWER, I get nothing... nada.

I've seen most people having problems like this with their c1k, but few to none with a c3k.  Am I missing something?  is it my Z?  Any ideas?

Thanks!
jason

I've recently gone back to the Sharp ROM (I say gone back but I've never used it as I had the Jap version and flashed it straightaway). I've noticed a couple of key things.

* It's really fast - I mean compared to pdaX and OZ with the main GUI's (I tried most) it really was noticeable to me after using the others.
* It works - Sound, USB drive, suspend/resume/installed apps etc.
* Looks nice

Thanks to Cresho for his fully loaded backup this made it even easier.

The only real disadvantage is the lack of certain application support (e.g. Firefox) but it's not a real problem.

For the person that just wants it to work and doesn't want to spend time playing around with different distros and apps to find the right combination (as fun as it is) I can recommend the Sharp ROM (I guess people who don't want to mess around will have this on already but still).

Things are definately shaping up with the other ROMs though so I'll be keeping a close eye on them.

Sorry just realised it maybe slightly off topic but thought I'd mention it.
