How About Just 2 Branches?
« on: June 05, 2006, 01:17:29 am »
I realize that this has been sort of the plan, but things have been getting abit confusing with pdaxrom --loads of new feeds and betas and quetions about which models/drivers/images work together, etc.

Might it not be easier (when things settle down a bit with the 2.6 based release)
To have a pdaxrom branch 1 and 2?  Consolidate the rc 10 >> beta3 stuff into a nice stable 2.4 system for all current Z's....and leave it moslty for communitty  based contributed packages... and don't have the pdaxrom developers mess with it much anymore.

Declare the 2.6 based stuff pdaxrom  or unstable or dev or whatever, and put the main effort in there   (as is being done).

The main point would be consolidating a pdaxrom stable that beneits at least some from the recent 2.4 based beta development.
 what is the concensus view?

I would say that I have been asking the same thing, not in so many words but that was my intent. I definitely like pdaxrom, I use it every day in my business and personal activities and support the effort financially. However, I need to be able to use it daily and do not have the time to constantly tinker. I would say this is a good idea.

I doubt there is any evil intent.  Seeinghow quickly they have been releasing stuff, and how much work is going into beta4, I think this sort of house keeping got put on the back burner.  It could also be that they intend to make a 2.6 kernel based system stable, and pretty much abandon the 2.4 based stuff. Either way, it will be nice when it is all sorted out.

One of the things I have valued in pdaXrom was its effort to provide reasonably reliable and usable versions that you could stick with for a while during the intervals when major new features and capabilities were being introduced and tested. Its also quite easy to try out the new features a bit and go back to a more stable version for day-to-day use.

A stable final 2.4 kernel version for all the various platforms with support for large SD cards would be very valuable to sustain the base of ordinary users while the work on the new 2.6 kernel version goes forward. I also hope the team can manage to do it.

WOW!  1.1 and 1.2 are ...gone from the pdaxrom site.  I found beta4 not-ready-for-what-I-need-it-to-do  was gonna go back to beta1  and try my luck with the sd module... and its gone!  Back to cacko, if I ever get to see anything but the diagnostic screen on my 3100 again

pdaXrom downloads including beta 1, feeds, etc., are [a href=\"http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/]here[/url]. Most everything but beta2 can be found somewhere there, but it's all hard to find at the moment as links from the old official page are generally dead. Hopefully, the new site will get going soon, as those casually interested may be frustrated with the project site as it now stands and harder to lure back later.

Thanks! 1.1 will better suit my needs... though I'd love to get the app manager applet from 1.3 working on it.

I really liked 1.3, but suspect I won't get my sd card working on it
