Two questions. First, why does this link try to download an apparently empty binary file?
Second, is this app going to be open source? A couple of years ago I picked up a Newton cheaply and played with it for a while and was appaled to discover that most apps for it were closed source commercial software. I can't imagine people are trying to make money out of a dead platform.

That's just a direct link, i can't imagine what have made you think it's something to download.

Most Newton software today is freeware.

I click on the link (using firefox on linux) and get a dialogue asking what I should do with a file named h5bhn2qa.bin coming from http://homepage.mac.com. The file is empty, but it's there.

Can you point me to where I can find free Newton software? Most of the stuff at UNNA seems to be crippleware.

The link works fine for me with Opera and IE under windows.

  It's true that most of the software made for the Newton when Apple was still selling it is commercial, but 95% of the software made after 1997 is completely free.   Of course those commercial programs are now abandon-ware and a lot of them have been re-licensed or the publisher has given serial numbers for the community to use.

  About Source code,  you are probably rigth again,  but the nice thing about the NewtonOS is that the source code for 99 % of the programs is easily accesible using a inspector tool or viewFrame,  you can compare it a bit to Squeak (made by Apple too some time after the newton),  everything is accesible and modificable.
