Rom Image Requirements?
« on: June 30, 2006, 11:08:16 pm »
Hi,

I've been using Cacko for a while now.  Opera and Netfront are great for browsing.  Kino seems to crash often during a movie(s) in Xvid4.  I happen to be watching videos alot more now.  So I'm looking to try another Rom Image on my C1000 that may have better video support.

I've used Matchbox, the default WM, but for some reason on my C1000, the applets always seem to dispear on their own.

I saw a whole bunch of howto's for XFCE, and a build of E17 from the OZ guys.
Which rom image with video support is the most stable?
What video player (one with a gui is best so I can easily just point and click a video quickly)?

Is there a XFCE image I can try?  It would be great if that was an option on the download page.

Also on the PDAxRom main paing I saw a link dating back to Jan 06 about installing KDE and using it as the default WM.  Does the howto using the whole squashfs thing still needed for beta4 or do I install KDE from the feeds now?

No there isn't... Yet that is... I'm playing to get intouch with the pdaXrom bunch in colabaration with Chero to maybe branch out pdaXrom into WM segments... just a working out of the box choice... We have been pushing the whole "Open-er-ness" of the rom to include and benefit the community... and I think this might be a good thing with the growing popularity of the XFCE WM...

Now on to your main question.

I have heard a lot of good in Cacko with its bvdd support for mplayer... but I can't vouche for it because I don't and haven't ever used Cacko...

on the pdaXrom side of things... video playback in X11 works... but you will get the best playback from the shell... because you wont have alot of apps running in the background utilizing resources...

Never used it... but I wouldnt expect very good play back in KDE due to the fact that it is more resource heavy then XFCE and matchbox combined...

So... ok I'm tired... but... mplayer from any shell would be the best for you... there is an cacko mplayer package that can be used in Xrom and if I wasn't so tired I would find it...

PS Sorry if this is broken up... but when I wake up I will clean it up... if there are no posts after mine...
