Beta 3 Fixes, Customs, Contrib
« on: July 17, 2006, 11:12:53 pm »
I have assembled a collection of edits, fixes, how-to's, and documentation that I thought would be handy for a new user to pdaXrom. The hardest part of learning pdaXrom when I first tried to install it was the fact that there is no one central place for documentation. (apart from this forum) Hopefully this will help bring (and keep) new users around

http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm

I also hope that by having all the fixes listed that we can find for the 2.4 system .. we will eventually be able to release an installer that will work from the get-go insted of having to edit scripts and fixes. Any fix not listed please email or PM me. I will try to add more as I continue to explore.

Where can I find a beta3 release for C7x0? Is it more stable than beta1 on C7x0?

beta 3 for 7x0-860 lives in contrib

http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/1.1.0beta3/Zaurus-7x0-860/

The latest 'stable' for 7x0-860 is beta 1 tho. But try it out

Ugh... I forget the name of the tool, but it should be easy enough to dump EVERYTHING into one feed, weed out the wonky, and roll an image that works right the first time (and has the right stuff-- That'll be a conversatio, better tar up the big feed and add a how to).
Does the big sd ipk work with beta3? is there a big sd solution?

Dear adf,

There is no simple solution to big sd cards (>1G). Pdax uses a float library
different from normal sharp rom so one cannot simply extract a kernel
module from normal sharp rom and put it in pdax. The drivers for large
sd cards are from sharp rom and are in binary only (C-guys for 860,
sharp for C3x00 and C1000).

May be in Beta 4 ?

BR,

Felix.

adf, you provoke an interesting thought - isn't the root filesystem including installed programs and settings a nice separate piece of the installation? Could different versions be created with different apps installed and configured ready to go? E.g. things discussed in other topics, like a different default WM, could be provided by a complete different image layout...

Or maybe that's more work than I think and my thoughts are best kept to myself...

Yes I found it and actually tried it. It worked OK until I slip in my 2G SD card. The system locked and would not accept any other cards. After a battery off restart the system halted at "Starting CF service...". I don't know what caused the problem but I gave up trying beta3. Yes you're right about beta1 is the most stable release for C7x0-860

Very nice website indeed!  Everything essential (from the user's perspective) is in one place.
I am just curious about the General Electric usb adapter kit you mention there.
This one looks even more useful than iRiver's and ZHost. Without the cable I don't need to worry about dangling the usb things while fearing breaking the small connector on Z.
I've been googling it but I cannot find relevant information about where and how to buy it. Could you give me a pointer?
Today I also flashed back to Beta3 as I can't stand the bugs and problems in Beta4 which make my C1000 not really usable as before.

Bullshit. softfloat == userspace, kernel modules == kernelspace.

pretty much on the money, considering I used a 4 gig card on beta 1 for months.... in fact ,i did it using tetsu's (sharp) module.   I was curuious t know if anyone had tried the same thing on beta3, not taking a poll to see who didn't think it would work.  The main problem I've found using a shaprish 2.4 kernel with a big sd is ipkg wanting no more than 1 gig on /mnt/card.

It's a GE USB2.0 6 in 1 kit. part # H097920

Walgreens sells them for $12 GE adapter

Thanks for the pointer. It's a pity that Walgreens only ships within the States. I remember seeing this when I was there (but forgot to buy one    ... ). Maplins' is way too expensive as the single adapter already costs 5.99 pounds, just the same as the whole GE usb kit.
Reichelt has some very cheap offers, but doesn't seem to have the right one for Z:
[a href=\"http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=42;atype=akku_select;special=akkus]http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=42;atype=ak...t;special=akkus[/url]
(BTW it's also selling incredibly cheap SD cards and USN sticks!)
Gotta look around again.
