Most Stable Pdaxrom For 3100?
« on: August 07, 2006, 07:21:39 am »
Hello,

which pdaXrom version is most recommended for a C3100?
And what are the current unsolved problems with that version?
(or is there an overview which clears up these questions for all Zaurus models? I didn't find one...)

And:
Is turning back to Sharp / Cacko easily possible with a simple NAND backup / restore of Cacko before pdaxrom installation and after trial?
I need a fast way to switch back to Cacko in case I find that pdaXrom doesn't fit my needs...

Thanks a lot!
daniel

Doesn't meet your needs? hahaha... you wont want to go back after you have used pdaXrom... but yes... nand backup... and restore... easy as pie :-)

How about beta4?  I heard that it's not that stable.

Thx.

That sounds good. I'll try it.

I hope so
But I have used beta1 for some days and found reasons to switch back (don't remember which reasons, though). But now that more aplicatoins are available, and the most important ones are hopefully stable enough, I give it one more chance. QTopia has so many downsides, especially when running console apps, and incompatibilities etc...

We'll see.

Thanks

Some additional questions:

Is the MD partitioning touched in some way by pdaxrom beta3?
That would make switching between Cacko and pdaxrom much harder, as not only a NAND backup / restore would be needed.

Can make pdaxrom use of the Sharp-default MD partitioning (i.e. the large /dev/hda3 vfat partition)?

And regarding software:

What ebook reader can you recommend? I'm currently using opie-reader which is very nice.

Do applicatoins compiled for RC11+ (i.e. in the RC11+ feed) work under beta3? That's the only feed I could find the latest KDEPIMPI (2.2.7) in, which I would need.

Does the kopi-apm stuff work well now? I remember that in beta1 the Z didn't wake up on a KO/PI alarm, even though the kopi-apm package was installed and KO/PI was running.

Are the problems with PDF creation from Abiword solved now? I'd really like to create PDFs from text documents and spreadsheets.

How about printing? Does pdaXrom contain a full print spooling system? Any experiences with a Brother MFC210 USB printer / scanner / copier?
Printing is one of the things I missed much in Cacko and its applications!

I want to make the Z as much as possible a PC replacement, but it must still be a PDA, i.e. contain PIMs, wake up on alarms etc. I think pdaXrom is the best ROM for that goal, isn't it?

Thanks a lot for any piece of information!

I dont believe it does... I use C1000...
But I could almost guarentee that it doesnt touch it... other then mounting it...

Well justreader works with some ebook formats... not pdf though... but that seems pretty good... sorry I dont read ebooks :-)

the majority of the apps in there will work... there are a given few has have problems... but I would give that package a 99.9999% chance of working.

I have no clue about this... I dont use PIM apps

Hmmm... I believe I heard about someone building the cups packages or something trying to get the current cups packages working.

Yes, this is the reason why I'm sticking with pdaXrom... It gives me all the functionality (well just about all the functionality) of my full fledged pc... I think my Fedora Box is jealous.. :-)

For Beta4 I need to do a NAND erase and then a NAND backup with the original image. It seems the Beta4 u-bootloader somehow makes the common OK mode (accessing the usual Flash Menu in order to flash to older versions of pdaXrom or Cacko or Sharp stock rom) unavailable.

I have reflashed my C1000 back to Beta3 from Beta4 because I need a working machine for my daily work. I won't say Beta4 is bad at all. Actually it's quite some fun to get a taste of the more bleeding edge stuff, bearing in mind that it is 'for extreme testers only'.

Yes, most of them will do. Actually you will find most of these apps in the current official feeds for the Betas. Yet some of them need libstdcxx5_compat_5.0.7_armv5tel.ipk (look it up in pgas' pinned thread) and/or libiconv_1.9.2_armv5tel.ipk (can be found in the feeds) to be installed.

I have tried quite a number of PIM alternatives, but none of them really match the functionality of KO/Pi, despite its size and demand on resource. JPilot seems to come close, as I still keep my Palm PDAs (the good old Handera 330) as a backup of all the contacts, but the alarm doesn't work even with atd. Still in search of a suitable solution for PIM -- the quintessence of a PDA. Perhaps will fall back to KO/Pi someday.

In fact, up till now the full KDE package (and also the faster squashfs image    ) for pdaXrom has given me most things I want for a laptop replacement of course at a (personally not so big) cost of speed and memory.
I also keep sticking with pdaXrom because I do love its straightforwardness, flexibility and not so steep learning curve to set up one's own development environment. Using its zgcc(s) is real fun. And importantly it has very good mutli-language and CJK support.

Thanks for all that info.
I decided to flash pdaXrom.

When it came to the question of the root fs size, I patched the Sharp loader and made it 121MB in size, giving me the message "mtd - not in reach, skipping" or similar when booting. Any downsides of this?
Should I have set it to less than 121MB?

Two problems:
My 2GB ext2-formatted SD card is not recognized. It even screws up the SD card manager to not recognize any other card afterwards it seems (until I reboot).
I thought pdaXrom comes with that new driver.
Where can I find it for installing?

When rebooting, the shutdown hangs at
"Unloading USB modules: "
WHen I press Ctrl-C it says
"INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel".
I have to remove the battery in order to reboot.
I have not used any USB devices yet under pdaXrom.

Can this have to do wiht th 121MB root partition?
Or with the attempts to load the 2GB SD card?

Thanks for any hint
Daniel

The startup script attemps to mount the /home to the remaining flash partition. Since you've patched and used up NAND for / structure, this action failed. Yet the /home directory still exist at the / structure, so no harm at all.

This is due to u-boot, it isnt the sharp bootloader that comes stock on our Z's... Sharp Bootloader holds the (Ok+On) application... Once it is gone... it is gone... Well until you flash your backup nand back... :-)

No go under beta3, that is the only pinch with beta3... no support for sd cards greater then 1gig... that is the plus to beta4...  Beta5 when it is released will prolly fix all the issues and make it the *NEW* stable release... :-)

try
beta 1, NOT beta 3
use the beta3 feeds and the contrib feeds.  if this ( it did me) makes you nervous, use the beta1 3100 feed, the beta 3 main feed and the contrib feeds
the sharptom/tetsu sd module will work in this setup, and you should see your 2 gig sd (tried it- it worked with my 4 gig)

get the 3100 restore stuff from trisoft -- makes restoring the hd easy

you don't HAVE to format your hd to use beta1 or 3.

Interesting. Thanks for th info!
Is there any reason why that tetsu driver wouldn't work in beta3 if it works in beta1? I'm tempted to try it, even more because I probably have to reflash pdaxrom anyway once I have tried so many things to adapt it that some things may be broken :-)

I heard rumor that 1 was the liklier candidate, so I used beta1. Something to do with mods in the beta3 kernel.   It might work just fine.  give it a shot.if it doesnt' work then do the beta1&3 hybrid....

I'd love to hear how it went.

edit: if ipk says there isn't enough room on the sd (if you install to sd in pdaxrom on a 3100--I put everything on flash or the microdrive and keep my sd fat for compatability)) that simpky means it wants a <1gig partition mounted at /mnt/card.  It's an issue in sharp and cacko- no idea on pdax.
