4gb Sd / Quicktime / Software Compatibility
« on: August 13, 2006, 07:00:42 am »
Hi all,

I've been reading up on everything I can find lately as I'm expecting my new C3200 to be delivered from Conics soon. Held off posting any questions until now, but really want to know a few things, namely;

- Is it possible to play quicktime mov videos, I can't find any reference to quicktime on any zaurus sites.

- Want to get a 4Gb SD card, and I see there are people using them and drivers to support it, but is this cut & dried, or does the driver only work on certain distros. What if I want to use the SD card to store another distro or whatever. And if there are problems, would partitioning it to 1Gb say, be a workaround?

- Finally, I've noticed lots of cool software, like emulators, and games, that are designed for older Z models, will I be having problems getting these to work on a C3200 if there is no updated software for my model (or the C3X00 range). And would it have to be available in the feeds or could I just install an IPK from one of the software pages.

Thanks everyone for contributing to teaching early learners like myself!

Well I've ordered a 4Gb SD card off ebay so I hope that works ok, as for my other questions, I'll find out when I get the unit.

Kinda curious what the most popular distro is, I think I'll start a poll to see as I've not seen one on my quest for Z education

I think you mean the most popular ROM ...

If that is so - such a poll has already been done - do a search.
and I think the most popular ROM choice is  Cacko ROM - which is Sharp ROM compatible.

But then again do do a search for the poll - thay be different now - peoples tastes and needs change with seasons...

quicktime movies?  yes but you may need to run it at 20fps and less than 320x240 for the sharprom

a good rom?  the default one is fine and you can try this one just to wet your toes.  http://www.zaurusthemes.org/oddpics/zaurus-rom-3200v5.zip what that does it adds usefull tools and stuff i feel need and is important.  you can then look at pdaxrom and oz if you want to really dive into the shark infested waters.

for emulators, do this one.  Its self explanatory and no hidden treasures to look for.

cresho:

Thanks for the advice, I'll be taking it gentle at first so that sharprom will be useful - but I will be paddling around those infested waters as it's half the attraction of the Z to me  Glad to see people with C3200's as I've been getting a little nervous as to the compatibility with the unit.

nilch:

Oops, I already posted the poll, but should be interesting anyway - still can't find an old poll but will have a further scout round. Still getting my tongue round the terminology, it's "rom"... "rom"... ok got it, thanks

distro is the right term. rom is a misnomer carried over from the old models and mistranslated by the japanese. the word rom was right for the 5500 but is completely wrong for any other model but it kinda stuck in usage...

HAH!

pdaxqtrom is great.  Finaly figured out how to update without me reinstalling everything.

I just remove the entry in fstab and delete fluxbox directory.

Got gimp working  without needing the qpdf2 freetype.  Ill try another old version without freetype.

play with the sharp "distro" and see if it does everything you want, if it dosent start asking qestions to see wether its a setup problem or if it cant do what you want, if it cant then i suggest a switch to a linux kernel 2.6 rom (PDAXROM or OZ)

i found that the sharp rom didnt have everything i wanted and i had to jump throgh hoops to get it to do what i want (ie booting without X). by going to another ROM you do get a more "normal" filesystem layout but i dont know how much of a benifit that is to some

if i remeber correcttly there is a kernel module for the sharp rom that allows you to have SD cards up to 4CB, and most 2.6 kerenls allow a 4GB card to be used

software is a big issue, look in the cxx00 section if there is an app you want as in most cases there may be a trick or two to getting it to run, if its built using SDL then it should work fine after an ipkg or two is installed, also be sure you install BVDD and the bvdd mplayer

Thanks for the tips folks, I'll definately be checking out the basic sharp rom when I get it, and pdaxqtrom sounds like a good plan to dabble in both realms for a while.

Also I'm eager to attempt some cross compiling and packaging - maybe I can help out the community, but I'm not yet sure how much work is involved (I imagine most of the *essential* apps are already packaged). You may see me requesting a prod or 2 in the right direction at some point.

I do a lot of work from the within shell so I imagine running OZ or pdaxrom will be my ultimate configuration, and the chrooted debian sounds mighty tempting as that's my background really.

And while I'm here, thanks meanie for the excellent source of Z info, your site is the most useful place I've found so far
