C750 Install Questions
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:16:03 pm »
I've had a 750 since shortly after they were introduced. I spent many many many hours working on it trying to get all the things I wanted working correctly, but there was always something wrong. Too much buggy software and conflicts I guess. All my time was spent trying to make it useful, rather than actually using it, so I finally gave up and it has just been used for games for almost 2 years. Well, I've finally decided to try again, and pdaXrom seems closest to the functionality I'd like to achieve. I have a few questions though before I go too far.

I've seen some comments about the best version for the 750 is still beta 1. Is this true?

I have installed beta 1 to get started and had some problems. The instructions I've read say to use a 30 MB root partition, but the install fails. After reading other comments, I increased this, I think to 45, and then it worked. What is the correct value to use, and what are the consequences of using a larger size?

Related to this, is the root partition only installer by Ashley still a good thing to do? And is there any updated information?

Another question on disk devices, I see that I have /dev/mtdblock/3 mounted twice, as /home and as /mnt/user. I read that this is something for ipkg installation where /mnt/user is bound to /home/user, but df shows that 1500 blocks are used in the partition, while du for /home only shows 73 blocks used. What are the other 1400+ blocks?

I have a C750, and can answer some of your questions. I believe that Beta1 is the latest stable release for C750. Best is a matter of opinion, but it is what I use and it works well. As for root partition size, I use 57MB (Patch the installer from the installer menu, then enter 57MB for your root size, even though it still says 30-45 or whatever it is). This gives me a larger contiguous area to install stuff. I believe that /dev/mtdblock/3 is mounted twice for installing software there. It allows you to use the free space in your home area, but keeps the files separate.

Corrections are welcome, and I hope this helps.

By patch do you mean Item 3 on the Nand flash utils?

  3. Fix loader 64MB limit (for SL-C760/C860/C1000/C3100)

and do you still get a /home partition then?

Or do you mean the modified installer from Ashley that gives you just a root partition?

Aslong as your root partion isnt' 121mb then you will have a /home partition...

I use a 85mb root size... to fit all my apps into root space... well in beta3... beta4 and up... You dont really have a choice...

Yeah, I guess it's that 57MB number. And 64 isn't so bad. More would be nice, but I used to have a lot of apps loaded on my SD card. It's slower, but still usable.

So, using the "Fix loader" menu option will let me use all of the space for root, and this will work on the 750, even thought it says 760 and up?

I think you can just put in 57mb you will be good... it just wont prompt you to format the user space... hince there not being any allowable space for one...

Ok, I gave it a try. I just have the one partition, and things seem to work.

I did get the following showing up three times as it booted, which I didn't see before.

VFS: Disk change detected on device mmcd(60,1)
 mmcd/disc0/disc: p1
devfs_register(part1): could not append to parent, err: -17

I've googled for that but it didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Edit:So, I've found one post here that said it's normal to see such errors with SD cards. Well, I'm sure I saw no errors like that until after I switched to one large partition. But I've switched it back to two and now I still get the errors. I even restored a NAND backup from before, then redid pdaXrom and it still does it.
