Any Hope?
« on: October 29, 2006, 12:11:46 pm »
I've been following the reports about recent releases and the 760 -- all reports are depressing and dismal.

Is there any hope for a consolidated *new* release that works on *all* C or later models?

Also, it seems like the installation method has recently become more complicated and risky.

What's going on?  It seems like development / releases have come to a near complete stand-still.

I would like to know if the final release will have a 2.4 kernel or a 2.6 kernel.

Sorry if that was a dumb statement. I didn't know if the 2.6.x stuff was just an experiment or if it was actually going to be used. I assume that it will delay the release a bit, as it's buggy?

2.6 isn't buggy... there advancements  in the 2.6 series of kernels... to utilize the new and improved features somethings need to change... and as everyone knows... sometimes change it for good... and sometimes for bad... well there is always a period of bad working the bugs out of the new setup... and that is what we working out now... this as releases are delievered they will improve in stablity...

We all thank the reports of bugs and problems with beta releases...

PS. If a stable release is what you are looking for use beta1 or 3... if bleeding edge is what your looking for... Beta121 is the way to go... plus you can help the cause...

If I install r121, can I easily get my Sharp bootloader back? Also, do packages compiled for the 2.4 kernel work on 2.6?

I have been scared of messing up my Z, but I've heard you can't brick them software-wise. I may have to rey this...

Thanks

With your set up right now... make a NAND backup prior to moving over... AND do a NAND restore... make sure that works prior to upgrading... people end up upgrading and wanting to go back... and then realize there CF/SD doesnt work with restoring here NAND...

Easily... I would say yes... but be patient...  a lot of people can't get in the diag menu... and are quick to post "rc121/Beta4" sucks and now it bricked my Z...

Please try not to be one of those people... everyone that has posted and been stuck... ending up getting there Z back in working order using the same method the person posting (the SAME issue) before did

I try to read other posts about people with the same issue before saying something's broken.

My SD card has worked flawlessly for backing up/restoring in the past. Also, I have nothing important on internal flash, so if it does get wiped out, I really don't care. Worst case I download a backup from Conics (if it were up) and restore that.

I have the haunting feeling that you might want to put that backup on a FAT 16 cf card..... just in case.

I will second that... just incase... because if you decide within 5 min that you want to go back to beta1 or beta 3... you WILL need a NAND containing the Sharp Bootloader...

I did decide to go back to beta1 after ~5 minutes and my backup worked fine. Flashing isn't bad at all if you follow the instructions.

Yeah. The new icons and panel are nice. I also approve of using Leafpad instead of SciTE as the editor. It's too bad that it's larger than Beta1, with only 64MB of flash, you have little room for apps.  Yet another reason to get an SL-C3100 (If only Conics were up...).

Difficult to answer fully.
Sashz will probably say something more specific at some point.

AFAIK he is back from Brazil.
He is working for a company there, which utilizes thin Linux clients.
The codebase for these clients and the SL-C3k Zaurii is shared and open source.
So there will be SVN snapshots for sure.
I am not so sure whether they will be as polished as previously, but Sashz has indicated he doesn't mind contributors in this area.

With the new job he probably does not depend that much on donations and he can afford a better connection and dev/build hardware.
On the other hand time for Zaurus-specific development could be less.

To put it shortly -- wait until he shows up.
If you are impatient, send him an email or IM, or chat at Freenode.

In the next few weeks... I'm prolly going to disect this OS and learn the ins and outs of everything... once I get it all down... I may start contribing to the SVN... My whole problem is... is alloting my self time to do it...

Well like I said in the above posts... it is better to "try" then not "try" at all...
