Zaurus Sl-c1000 & Pdaxrom
« on: November 13, 2006, 12:17:00 am »
Dear all,

I have my Zaurus SL-C1000 for half year. I use it to web surfing, email reading, MSN, ICQ as well as the most important task - movie playing. The original sharp rom did this job quite good.

Now, I'm considering to move to pdaXrom. It's because it have a lot of applications. I have concerns on it and I'd like to ask several questions.

1. Does the pdaXrom have an acceptable performance on running mplayer? it's because I spend a lot of time to do this task

2. Does it support Traditional characters display/input on pdaXrom? I know that the handwriting method is not supported in pdaXrom. Is it true?

3. What's the stability of pdaXrom?

Please advise. Many many thanks.

1. Yes. My experience:
Cacko/sharp - good
pdaXrom - good
OZ - pretty good
(note... this is just my experience)

3. As long as you know how to set the time properly after a reboot and can be patient with the resume process, you will be fine.

For 2:
I suppose what you meant is Traditional Chinese support. Actually getting Chinese display and input is even easier than in Sharp/Cacko. Basically you only need to do two things:
First, simply throw your favourite TTF font(s) into /etc/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF, or put the font(s) on the card and symlink to that path;
Then install an input method with Chinese support: SCIM, GCIN, or UIM. They are all standard and popular inputmethods on desktop Linux so they are stable and mature enough.
Murphytalk on Sharp/Cacko is nice, but it only supports simplified characters input.

Life is too precious for hacking *too much*
