Pdaxrom Versions, History, Kernels

I'm currently running cacko, but I'd like to give pdaXrom a go.I'd like to be running something with a 2.6 kernel if possible. However, with all the talk of pdaXii3, I am confused as to which versions are which.

I've read the pdaXrom website, and some of it (e.g. the about page) is quite out of date.

Is there a compatibility matrix anywhere showing which zaurus has which releases available, and the release showing the kernel version + gcc/glib version. e.g.

pdaXrom and pdaxii3 are not the same thing, pdaxii3 being a fork of the pdaxrom 1.1 beta3 with some tuning/fixes specific to C3XX0/1000.
pdaxii3 being a fork of beta 3 should run with 2.4 kernel series so it might not be what you want.

pdaxrom 1.1 beta4 and above (including r121) have 2.6.16 (or possibly higher in the future) kernels for all Z's
pdaxrom 1.1 bera3 or below (and pdaxii3) all have kernels in the 2.4 ... nor sure if 2.4.18 or 2.4.20

Yes, you can make a full nand flash backup befor installing any pdaxrom version, from that nand backup it will allways be possible to reinstall cacko.
In the best case just restore the whole nand backup ... in the wors case you might haveto fiddle with emergency system. Do a little search on the topic here you will find all the details.

For 3100 the most stable version (for first trial) might be 1.1.0beta3.

You could also try 1.1.0r121 which has a newer kernel and newer gnome/glib2 apps and libs, but is experimental.

I suggest beta3 :
- more stable
- can be "undone" the same way you install a new cacko version
- most cards etc. work out of the box
- you'll have to change feeds in the package manager
or pdaXii3 :
- please read the install instructions
- is optimized to work out of the box, so has correct feeds etc. pre-installed

There is a newer version coming out in a few weeks, which will a 2.6 kernel and the newer gnome/glib2 apps and libs but will have less bugs.

I'm running r121, after running beta3 for a few months.
- r121 is faster, can compile newer (gnome-)apps out of the box, runs pretty stable after fiddling.

For a 3100 I wouldn't recommend pre-beta3 versions.

thanks very much for the clarification. I need to run kernel 2.6 for my experiments in running tomtom go s/w on the Z, a problem resolved with OZ,  fails on cacko, and would be nice to get working on pdaXrom. Also, never tried pdaXrom, and am happy to learn!

I am in the same situation with an c860.  Looks like my choices are beta1 or r121.  I am not religious about kernels.  I just need Socket BT support and a robust development environment (on or off Z is fine).

I just completed a NAND backup, I am ready, so beta1 or r121?  Thanks.

P.S. Is pdaXrom still actively developed?

I'd use Beta 1 to start with.

I felt driven to r121 on my C3100 because Beta 3 was really slow, but there is no such problem on the Cxx0 models. R121 has a few issues that need to be worked out and it takes longer to get to a point where everything is mostly functioning and usable than Beta 1.

No, I'd try it now.

The release is "hopefully in a few weeks," so it may be a while. Also, it's better to discover something good sooner than later, it leaves you more time to figure out what WM you like and so forth. Get hooked right away!
