xmms is supposed to play movies, doesn't it?
I tried to load a mp4 file that plays fine in cacko, but xmms doesn't even load it.
I cannot get it to display "file info" either.
xmms looks like an audio player, does it really play movies?
Sorry about the newb questions.  I installed all the libraries it said were missing.

no, xmms is an audio player. it does however have a mplayer plugin to launch mplayer to play the movies for you...

I installed mplayer-bvdd-iwmmxt from your feed meanie.
Then I installed the xmmsmplayer plugin, then verified that the plugin was enabled in xmms, then tried to play my movie, but nothing happened. xmms didn't even give me an hourglass or clock (wait icon).
I opened a console and issued "mplayer --help", but I got command not found.

I think you have to type mplayer2 --help

I renamed it to mplayer and it did launch the help in the console.
I am not going to use commandline to just play a movie.
How am I supposed to remember to type all of this without having it written on a sheet of paper in front of me?

mplayer /data/Movie_Files/UltimateBet.net-Poker-Tutorial.mp4 (that doesn't include the command switches)
I have some movies that I don't want to rename, like this one,
lost.223.live.together.die.alone.pt1.hdtv-lol.avi
If I get just one character mistyped, it won't work anyway.

I tried using xmms with the plugin and mplayer2, renamed to mplayer. I can't even get my movie to "Add" to the playlist, I've tried this 5 or 6 times.

I'm going to uninstall mplayer anyway, since it took 4MB when I installed it, and Cacko's movie player works so much easier.

i think you are barking at the wrong tree here.

mplayer2 which you installed is cacko's mplayer. they are the same binary but repackages for pdaXrom file structure.
cacko just uses a different front end, namely kino2 while there are many other ways of launching movies in pdaXrom, ie via xmms, via rox or any other file managers...

btw, there is also a file completion function in bash where you just type the beginning of the filename and then hit the tab key

you say launch it via xmms, then why won't it launch via xmms? and what is wrong with the playlist function? I should be able to add a movie to the playlist and have it appear in the list.
EDIT:
I just typed all that into the console, the movie plays sideways with numbers running through it from the console behind it.
If it plays in a console, why not in xmms?
EDIT2:
The mplayer plugin is listed in the Audio I/O Plugins, Is this right?
Where is the Video Plugins? There is no tab for Video, so I must assume that the mplayer plugin being located under the Audio Plugins is why it doesn't work.

I figured out that xmms doesn't recognise *.mp4
Is there a xmms config file somewhere? I cannot seem to find it.
I can play this *.mp4 file in the console using mplayer
I can load into the playlist, and play an *.avi file in xmms with the xmmsmplayer plugin.
I cannot load into the playlist, or play this mp4 file, which I just renamed to "poker.mp4"
What is wrong with mp4?
The mplayer description says it plays these and it does, but xmms, won't recognize this extension.

I renamed this *.mp4 file extension to *.avi and it NOW loads into xmms playlist and plays.
But this isn't really an *.avi file, because if I rename the extension to *.avi on my desktop, it won't play and causes a lot of error messages.
I also know it isn't an *.avi file because the website where I downloaded it from said it was a Quicktime filetype, and this is a commercial website, not some offbeat movie site.

What is wrong with xmms and the *.mp4 extension?

I haven't played hold'em, but have been watching "Poker After Dark" on NBC TV
The tutorial explains the button and the blinds. I didn't quite understand how that aspect of betting worked, and Annie Duke explains this pretty well.

Anyway, How do I make xmms understand that *.mp4 is a valid mediatype?
like I said before, the mp4 plays in a console, but xmms doesn't recognize it.

I still cannot get xmms to recognize or play a *.mp4 file. It won't play and it won't load into the playlist. it does play with mplayer in the console, and I do have the xmmsmplayer plugin installed and enabled.
I used MIME-Editor in Rox filer and added .mp4 to the "Quicktime" mimetype.
I found xmms config file here /home/root/.xmms/
I 'll post it here. Where or how do I add mp4 filetype to this config file?
