For Sale: Enfora Quad-band Gsm/gprs Modem

A friend of mine bought this for his ipaq but never really used it. Current price new is over 100 pounds:
    http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=140979

review here:
   http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tips/Enfora_GSM_CF_card.htm

Item is boxed, with CD and CF-PCMCIA adaptor, with CD/driver for windows mobile. It doesn't include the optional battery pack. I think it might be missing the headset, which allows you to use it for voice calling, but these are only a few pounds (as far as I know its the same universal headset as used by the Audiovox card as well as various Treos - four-pole 2.5mm jack)

I've tested it in my Zaurus and it worked very well with VirginMobile - I used command-line to start pppd as I broke qtopia dialler in some way.

I can vouch for the item as I borrowed it only recently to compare against my audiovox, and would be buying it myself if only I weren't contemplating getting a Nokia E65 to get 3G + quad-band gsm.

I just lost my cell phone on the ship. And I'm seriously considering a GSM/gprs modem. I'm not sure what's the GSM/gprs modem policy from US carriers. Anybody know if this will work with Cingular?

Edit: Dun  should have read the review before posting.

thanks for the reminder. I signed up for "PDA connect unlimited" data plan with Cingular ($39.99 no contract) tonight. Anyway we can use EDGE service. Is there Edge CF card or is it possible to use CF/PCMCIA adaptor with an EDGE pcmcia card?

Is there no 3G service in your area?

I'm thinking of buying this card, since my phone just died recently.

Would anyone care to comment how well it works with the zaurus?  The following link:

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tips/Enfora_GSM_CF_card.htm

claims that it does NOT use EDGE.

Collected more links here related to my question:

garsh, this whole GSM thing seems a little complex!

I am pretty confident in guessing that the Enfora module does NOT support EDGE, as although EDGE had been a GSM add-on for some time it really hasn't gained much traction.

If you really want 3G speeds you're going to have to tether your zaurus to a mobile phone using USB or bluetooth. Or, if you live in USA, there's lots of coffee shops around with free wifi, or even go to Starbucks monthly to use $5 and get free ATT wifi!

Yeah, I'm trying to do that... need to build kernel module:http://forums.opensuse.org/archives/sf-arc...-using-usb.html

I'm almost there... cross compiler breaks on each build, and native building is pretty slow...  it would be nice to just ditch my phone though.

Was thinking about buying the sparkfun deal someday if prices drop:
