call to arms
« on: March 09, 2004, 05:30:33 am »
to quote Mickeyl:

The build system migration is nearly finished now but since most of the work was done by nearly two people ( see http://openembedded.bkbits.net:8080/pac ... index.html ) we\'re pretty exhausted and motivation to start doing the now necessary integration work (integrate the device specifics to make OpenEmbedded capable of doing OpenZaurus builds) is low... frankly, rather not existing.

If the workload doesn\'t get distributed, it isn\'t fun. And if it isn\'t fun, it\'s not worth doing it. This is the Open Source credo isn\'t it?

If a bunch of people would start to do that integration work we could get into release mode in a few weeks... however since that didn\'t happen in the last months it could also take years to get into release mode again.

The community finally has to realize that two people are not enough to do such a huge task. I have realized it and I will no longer risk my profession and my health only for this hobby. Well, I\'m getting tired preaching the ole\' sermon again and again... read the OpenZaurus website, the OOO newsletters and openzaurus-devel@lists.sf.net and see how often we called for helping hands... without success.

:end quote

I must admit, I\'m new around here, but surfing through these forums it appears that there are quite  a few peeps in here. Being that this is a linux based system, I\'m betting that there\'s quite a few programmers in here too.  I\'d really like to see those releases start coming out again, especially for my 5600.  So I\'m dropping an email to mickey now.  All these people in here and only two people doing the majority of the work? Come on folks.  You\'ve got some time, you\'ve got some skills.  This gadget is the epitome of linux geekdom, there should be loads of people offering to help out. Help out with the integration and let\'s get those releases flowing. Just my two cents.....

I would love to help too.  I have a linux machine set up and ready to go for whatever is needed.  I don\'t have the programming skills either, but I could do cross-compilation/migration of apps, etc. if someone wanted to give me the rundown on how to do it.

I posted some info to the openzaurus-devel list, there\'s also a thread somewhere about this: http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...iewtopic&t=2147

i do have the intention to help, i\'m an experienced linux programmer, and i\'m currently ramping up my development environment to support my professional work as well as my hobby work.

problem is i\'m waiting for my sl5500 to arrive, and i can\'t find a good deal on the c860 in europe.  if i had a c860 right now, i\'d be doing a looot more work, and full-time too...

I recommend http://www.trisoft.de. Probably not what you call a good deal, but the support is really good and they\'re nice guys.

I\'d like to help out too.  Problem is that I use Cygwin, and it isn\'t currently supported on OpenEmbedded.  Windows environmental variables with spaces in them seem to cause problems with oebuild.

I also would like to help.
I\'ve tried twice with OZ/OE and once with xrom SDK... my freebsd and old redhat systems
just couldn\'t cut it.

I will probably get a new machine this spring that\'s capable of running a vm that is capable of
running an os that I can use to develop.

What I\'d like to do-- or to see... is a \"bochs\" other other linux VM DISK IMAGE
that has a full SDK set up and ready to go.  Many people have fast enough CPUs that
this wouldn\'t be that big of a deal -- ya, it wouldn\'t be as native for those who are
impatient or who are power users ...  but it would be complete, portable, configured...
and HIGHLY AVAILABLE!!!

think about it.

I hope this does not come off wrong:

After going through an invloved effort to get the build system up and running, I have no idea what needs to be done.
All I now have is access to bunch of unorganized snippets of conversations that have occured in the past, a bumch of source, and a build system I do not understand well.
I am not willing to read a year worth of chat logs to try and find some direction. So, what do I do? What is the next step? Is there a page somewhere with more articulated todo\'s? (I am guessing that I may have missed something)

Hi nixmester et al,

I have also tried approaching to help the OZ platform, but as eferrari, the lack of a minimal documentation has stopped me (looking on www.openzaurus.org). I\'m willing to help too !!

In the link I referenced above we\'re talking about this (image in though, two of so people doing all the work - not much time for docs, not much need for docs and other comms as they can just talk to each other).

We\'re going to make an attempt to get some more intro docs up and then sort out work allocation.

I now have a Linux box at uni (read on a fast connection to the net) so I should be able to get going a little more easily now. Someone was talking about creating a bootable Linux disc which can be used for development, this sounds like it might be a good idea - I\'ve run into troubles trying to obtain source from bitkeeper (due to Windows ignoring case differences in filenames) so I image that cygwin development of OZ would be a fraught process at best.

Well, anyone can post info on the wiki I do believe (haven\'t used \'em really yet), so if the peeps who can stumble their way through the process can post their info  up there, eventually someone can play \"editor\" and pull from those sources to make better documentation. If you do fiddle with it, I encourage ya to post info on the wiki. I\'ll try to do that myself as I start playing with openembedded this weekend. Until then, I\'m entirely engrossed with my new wifi card. Wow. How have I ever lived without one of these?
