attaching to hotspots
« on: March 09, 2004, 01:34:37 pm »
Hey all, I have a 5500 with a Linksys WiFi card.  I can scan for hotspots with wellenrheiter, but it doesn\'t allow me to log on to them like airsnort. =(
I\'ve tried entering the SSID shown for the network into the network config of the card (they don\'t have WEP enabled as far as wellenrhieter is concerned) and using dhcp to get on the network, but that doesn\'t work either.
Any suggestions for how I can log on to hotspots when I find them?

They may have mac address filtering on.  So you may be SOL on those networks.

Isn\'t there a way to \"set\" the MAC addy on some cards? Spoofing the MAC addy? You could sniff the MAC\'s of the clients, and then use the MAC addy yourself. I don\'t know how, but I\'m sure it\'s possible....`

Going on about bypassing macadress whitelisting it is possible but I\'m not sure if this is the place to discuss it so I wont go on unless I hear otherwise. What rom are you using novakane? If you want to connect to a specific one you can enter the SSID and you should connect to it unless they have something stopping you. Something to help let you know if your connected or not is wirless-applet which can be found here -] http://www.zaurususergroup.com/feed/        It might make it a bit easier. As far as I know the only way you\'ll be changing ssid\'s is to go thorugh network settings each time, unless someone has wrote a program or script to handle this that I dont know about.

Mac address spoofing is possible.  I had a neighbor that kept logging into my network (when I had no security enabled).  It didn\'t bother me until they started screwing it up somehow.  I initially locked them out by denying their mac address.  They then spoofed their address to match my son\'s computer (which since he uses a wireless bridge, took down the windows portion of the net).  I then had to further boost my security settings to keep them from screwing everything up.  Sooner or later, I will use my Z to track them down and knock on their door.  I am considering borrowing a small amplifier and waiting until they are up...wonder what a kilowatt and a directional beam will do to something that is used to power levels in the milliwatt range...Oh well, something to think about.  If only they would behave themselves, I wouldn\'t even consider locking them out.  I don\'t use the computer for anything sensitive anyway, I a real boring person.
