i am not actively trying to be on the top, it just happened since i was answering a lot of questions... and yes, i currently have no life. spending most of my time trying to find a suitable engagement ring...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=155665\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

when I got engaged, erm, pretty much five years ago, I went to a specialist diamond retailer, having read up on the details, and bought a "proper" certificated diamond. Lots of places will tell you that a certificate is expensive or pointless, don't believe them, it's because they're selling low grade diamonds and/or want to push you way upmarket. A smaller but good cut/quality diamond will be more impressive than a big junk rock, especially to people who know.

--edit--

oh yes, and congratulations! Are you going to stream the wedding live over the internet via your OQO

If he sets it up right all OESF can watch Menanay say 'I do' in five types of machine code on a live web stream. Legend has it Menaie hacked together one super-hot antipodean cyborg lady friend- I should know as I've heard Meanie has me in mind for best man. 1st class flight to Sydney, 5* accomodation, Kylie.. all catered for, ain't that right ol' buddy ol' pal?

yeah, they don't come cheap. don't know if it's the same in Au as Uk, but I was able to get the wife's ring insured "all risks" by putting it on the house's contents insurance and it only added about US$20 per year to the cost.

Sweet!  That's a nice perk for making 2000 posts!

Seriously though, I remember when I popped the question.  I almost cried afterwards.  My fiancee told me the next day that she had been waiting so long, she would have been happy with a cubic zirconia.  Actually, I think I'm tearing up now, just thinking about it.

my GF at the time, now wife,  had been already been telling her closest friends that I was going to propose to her over valentines (even before I'd absolutely made the decision to!). She'd noticed the bottle of champagne had been acquired... snag is on the day, she tucked into the fine chocolates I bought to go with the question. She'd have been humiliated if I'd paniced (sp?) and not proposed!
