by sources is this a new version of the build system? or just updating the source package repository?

My guess is that these sources are patched to work with whatever system is targeted for.  A further guess would be that the patches are mostly targeting the c1000 series of zaurii.  

I am no authority on the matter, but I wanted to keep this discussion alive.  Would someone more knowledgeable care to comment on the issue?
ZAURII:    sl-6000 : (temporarily) bricked pdaxrom b1   ||   sl-c3200 : yonggun/Debian-EABI
OTHERS:  htc-excalibur,  axim x5,  ipaq 4355, (still trying to find useable linux setups)
thinking about gumstix to replace/augment zaurus

It is just to keep all packages in a central location.

They aren't pre-patched... they are patched in the build process...

Now you *CAN* build with out using the distro.ibiblio.org/pub/blah/blah blah...
"./configure akita-***" and it will pull from the author but some of the links have changed and you may run into more errors then you can handle so it is best to use what we provide :-)
