Pdaxii13 W/ 16g On 3x00
« on: June 30, 2007, 08:32:19 pm »
I'm starting to think a 16G cf card to replace my MD might be a good idea. Since pdaxii13 (or whatever similar 2.6 pdaX system evolves) will be my OS, I'm curious about how, hypothetically, one might make best use of the big CF.

1) is an internal CF as fast as the Z's flash mem?

2) If so how would one do a complete pdaxii13 install on the CF (like the 3000 setup, I suspect) on a 3x00?

3) is a modified "all on the big cf card" install really worth doing? (seems to me it must be, but I've been wildly wrong before)

ideas, suggestions?

I guess by doing a manual partitioning ang formatting and then running hdimage install script it should work.  You might also be able to the one partition install option but that might bomb out.

I was thinking I'd do 2 cf partitons.. and a standard hd install with a4-6 gig ext2 and 9-11 of /data as fat32 plus about 320 megs reserved in a 3rd unformatted partition as per an overkill versio of kopsis' recommendations for disk life.

I'm using swapd to mange swap on sd atm to see how it works (quite well). I figure dynamic swap on the sd is the way to go--replacing even a 4 gig external sd is a lot cheaper and easier than replacing in internal 16g cf, if swap-on-flash causes problems.

what I was intersted in w/ pdaxii13 is eliminating writes to the NAND (unless that has pretty much been done?) I simply don't know if pdaxii13 full on a 3100 writes to nand as is or not.

Sorry I've been away from the forum.  If you are using the Akita (1000, 3100 and 3200) kernel then upgrading to Full you will have quite a bit of NAND writing still going on.  If you are using a straight Full install, you would be using the Spitz (3000) kernel which only uses (I believe) 16MB of the NAND.  There will still be NAND writes going on but it will be significantly less.

hmmm. what about a means to build a rootfs on the intternal cf (or sd or cf, really) and chroot, or something?

edit:  Just to be clear, I don't so much worry abiut the writes during a flash, it is caching and logging sorts of fhings that Id prefer not to happen on nand.  I assume some of 'em are on /media/fakeroo?t

I believe Meanie has minimized the caching and logging to the NAND so, most of that is done on the extended root.

that's what I was hoping to hear. I figure the cf can stand caching and logging for a few years with the swap on sd. even if it eats a 4gig sd each year(which I doubt) t'm only looking at about a $40 replacement with no surgery.
20 gig Z, here I come!

Let us know how you get on with the install - I'm looking to go the same way at some point, when UK prices for 16gb CF cards become more reasonable.

it works beautifully.

I formatted 3g ext2, 128m swap, 12+g fat 32 (and 198m unused at the end

I actually do swapoff and use swap on the sd card-- The idea with this scheme  is to avoid running afoul of the pdaxii13 hd scripting (and it seemed reasonable).

soo..with not too much fear and anguish (ennough, though) involved in the change from microdrive to flash I now have a 20 gig 3100 running pdaxii13 full.

Great news.  Did you use the pdaxii13 boot menu to partition the CF card?

Also, I'm interested that you used ext2 rather than ext3...any particular reason?

I believe that EXT2 wears on the card less.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if ext2 caused less wear. the fat32 was so I can use the Z asa usb key on pretty much anything,  the stuff I intend put on /data is pretty much static data. Hopefully the writes aren't enough to show any serious performance difference.
thanks for mentioning it, though

Ok.  In terms of getting it up & running, was it simply a matter of swapping the MD for the CF card & then doing a full install of pdaxii3 in the normal way?
