Kde Revisited (after Change To Cf)
« on: July 13, 2007, 02:24:44 pm »
Since I switched to an a-data 40x cf from my standard microdrive, I'd noticed that some things were way faster-- in rox , loadingt the contents on /usr/bin, or /usr/share/pixmaps is nearly instant, where with the MD it had shown noticeable lag.

Inspired by the thread on konq-e I loaded kdelibs from the 3.5 ipk (I'll be asking for help with libtool soon, I think) ..then figured I'd load the whole kde and see if there was a difference.  It is amazing--  Kde is really viable on my Z (though I Have to remap a key or two--the colon isn't working).

The point is that with low seek times kde menus pop up very nearly as quickly as icewm's do... konqueror opens in kde in 30 seconds (slightly -5-10 seconds less than firefox in icewm --and konqueror loads in about a minute in icwm, btw).
The gtk apps don't seem to load noticeably slower, either.
KDE is actually useable!

I'll have to dig out the camera etc... but I should be able to get around to it in a couple of days.

once accomplished, definitely.  Of course I have yet to actually use youtube for anything ohter than viewing a couple of Z  videos.
What you will see is the kde 3.5 from the ipk running along very smoothly. It isn't quite as fast as Icewm, but it is, as I said, much quicker than it was before the mod.  Stuff like konsole obviously takes longer to launch than a lighter equivalent, like aterm in either gui.
What I mostly run still is icewm with  a couple of kde apps linked on the desktop.  Longer loads for those apps than under kde, but more keys work in icewm, it is better configured for the Z and it is a little quicker.  Still, it seems to me that kde could easily be a default environment option for my Z with a little tweaking (thouh I worry that the "tweaking" might entail a recompile of kde)

I think that was shioirkuma's thing.  I have the ipk installers for kdebase kdelibs images and kdeedu....pretty much as much of kde 3.5 as was made available on the Z afaik. you want those?

a side note--trying to compile kde stuff on the z using meanie's zgcc (either) gives me a kde-config error in opt/native/arm....... the kde-config in usr/lib/kde seems to be fine (when tried with gcc from the fed which is not fine)  how do I get pdaax t use the kde-config from kde instead of the one from zgcc while still using zgcc ?

meh...don't bother, i just wanted to mess around with it. i thought that it would be quite painless if i could get the squashfs, just mount it and off you go. but i dont want to mess around with ipkg's. but thanks anyway...
