How About A Pinned Multidistro Thread?
« on: August 26, 2007, 03:58:42 pm »
I'm not quite sure how we'd make this as easy as possibly to use, but wouldn't it be nice if something--a table would be a good choice-- were setup up so that different systems cuold be compared on the basis of functionality?  we could even include links to a benefits page, arguing the benefits of the distro, and links to how-to pages for any setups that require tweaking, knowledge or insight.

This would be a real help--  imagine:  I'd like to try  2.6 based distro, or openbsd, or a desktop based distro--but I'm pretty set on having my hardware (especially my bluetooth gprs) working without issues.
I'd be nice to know, at-a-glance if the functions (hardware and software) I want are available. I'm sure this would be a big help for the Z community, though probably relly annoying to maintain.

I suggest this after years of trying different distros and finding at inconvenient times that something I wanted was unstable or unavailable. I'm sure we all have the same experiences in that regard, and that it tends to cause some unduly critical comments re one distro or another

This is a wonderful suggestion!
To make things easier at first, how about using a checklist with answers like "Yes (= works "out of the box")/ No (= something breaks/fails) /Buggy (w/ fixes if available)"?
Useful links can be added for reference.
Some simple benchmarking would also be interesting.
And matters concerning development may be important as well, such as documentation, release cycles, versioning, package system, etc.

i've set up a very simple wiki here :

http://matrixmen.free.fr/wikini/wakka.php?wiki=ZaurusDistros

i don't know if it is the good anwser but fell free to use it and test it.
initially it is my own (french) personal wiki, but why not a general (english!) zaurusdistro usage wiki...

rules:
-just doubleclick to edit a page
-to create a new wiki page, name it with 2 uppercase letters, save the page and click on the "?" which appears.

EDITED:
i've just though about Tyrannozaurus and there is yet a wiki there ! i don't know what Antikx is thinking about using it further

This is really something that would be helpfull !
Maybe we should build together a list of items that we are interested in so we can have as many points of comparison as people are interested in.
What do you think about it ?

edit: I added a small cacko introduction as it is the ROM I'm using. Feel free to correct it !
by the way, I'm french too, is there an active french zaurus scene (pdafrance is more or less dead on a zaurus level)

I added items that are important to me.
It's very user-oriented. I'll add more when I think about something new !

Do we really need yet another resource?
Meanies ROM page

Could we persuade Meanie to incorporate any additional comments on his original work?
Or maybe moving Meanies docs into a wiki would be a useful long term solution - both to preserve them and also allow others to maintain and contribute?

Also I thought that the Tyrano site had tried to start several wikis on Zaurus stuff already??
SL-C3000(Spitz) - pdaXii13 5.5alpha + sound enhanced kernel - MD in 1 great big partition -  Ambicom CF Wifi + USB Ethernet  and NOW Zubuntu on a 4Gb SD

Meanie did a very good job in presenting the distributions, especially Cacko and pdaXrom.
We're still short on informations for BSD, Debian, Angstrom.

And the table comparing features, ideally frequently updated, is a resource that really misses.

not really easy to do...
i've numbered the menu comparaison items then i've cut&paste to pdaxii13 wiki page. it gives that :

http://matrixmen.free.fr/wikini/wakka.php?wiki=PdaXii13

so we can add other categories/items and apply to other distros

It's not convenient to read.
Maybe a google spreadsheet ? (I've never used it before so I don't know if it is a good idea or not).
