Why is there such a lack of excitement here about the Neo?  These phones are already being sold to developers, and the consumer model is scheduled to be released in Oct.

It has almost everything folks here are asking for.  Am I missing something?

I am one who is also interested in the Neo, but let's be honest, it is a good bit away from being a finished end-user product.  It is a developers dream platform (all open-source); unfortunately, I'm not much of a developer so I need a more stable and mature platform.

Now that you've mentioned the Neo, I will say this.  I think it has even more upside potential than the iPhone or the iPod Touch because it is truly a phone of the people, for the people, and by the people.  Unfortunately, that is also the major negative, will the open-source community produce quality apps for the device(s) and will people buy it in high enough quantities to justify continuing putting money into the effort?

It's a lot like the current state of operating systems (MS, Mac OSX, and Linux).  MS is everywhere and very usable, just not very fun.  OSX is sweet and clearly the best of the bunch as far as fit and finish, but it's development is tied to what Apple wants to put in and when.  Linux has the "potential" to be FAR better than either one but it is dependent on the community, which again means that the people can have an OS that is more responsive to their needs, 'if' someone gets around to coding it and polishing it up.

That's my nickel's worth, feel free to make change.

I for one am much more exited about the Neo than the iPod, I'm just not vocal about it.

I feel the same. I follow the project closely, I'm just waiting for it to prove to me that this is the PDA/phone that I'll buy and keep for years !

Is the iPod touch an N800 killer?

Is the iPod touch the hardware for ubuntu mobile, to be released in October? Does anyone have any info on this?

Is it the perfect Z replace now?  No.  But the upside potential of this device is amazing and I hope they sell a ton of them so Apple will continue to improve it, because I see one in my pocket in the not so distant future.

I just recalled the old Apple sogan: "Think different".
Then I recalled the difference:  Jobs != Newton which leads to the equation Apple != PDA.

In other words: What Apple did to the Newton makes me feel that there is no space at Apple for such a PDA device. Toys are us.

yeah.. i've long had the feeling that Apple is far more dictatorial than MS, and simply comes off better for lacking th power to be worse-not that they don't make some nice stuff, but just because osx has a bsd under the hood doesn't, at all, make them friends of OSS, open hardware, or any other kind of freedom.  Think about it--if the iphone were (Idon't know what it actually runs) a locked-down unix device from Microsoft with a serious "don't tamper" EULA and and exclusive agreement with AT&T we'd all be screaming bloody murder about what a Nazi Gates is and what an evil device it is.
I don't know where Apple gets it magic fountain of goodwill--I think it is from non-technical, but influential arts and education folks who just think it is neat how the handful of apps they actually run work without thinking about it.  (something to be said for a device that makes few demands on the end user, though). we should, really, as much as possible, stick to supporting vendors who support open projects.

Well, I proposed to create an Neo/OpenMoko subforum here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=24426&hl=openmoko) but nobody was really interested in. Instead everybody was directed to the OpenMoko mailing lists...

I think when the consumer product is released, it will be more appropriate to have a subforum here.  We have several developers (respect to you all!), but many more end-users.  I'm saving my pennies for the release of the consumer model.

Apple chose BSD precisely because it used a BSD license, which IMO is a selfish license

Still think the iPod Touch is a PDA? If Engadget is correct (according to here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/10/apple-c...d-appointments/ ) you can't even add calendar entries without being at a computer. Basically the iPod Touch sounds like a memory-starved iPod with a web browser.

But hopefully I'm wrong.
