What Is The Best Rom For The Zaurus For 2007

I just bought a SL-C3200 and I want to start using pdaX... but which one ? Although I have been using Zaurii for some years now I only just started reading the pdaX forums in more detail - it's a nightmare trying to find latest status and which ROM has which features.

I think this kind of discussion is absolutely vital and I agree with your point, we need a community effort to put together decent documentation. Just think how much more meanie and pdaX team could do if they were only coding!! (Sorry guys, we'll let you take a break sometime).

BTW: Angstrom is totally opaque to me; I tried reading through the website but the only way to know anything about it seems to be start installing things. I hope this situation changes.

If you want to use pdaX, just go for Meanie's fantastic pdaXii.
If you want an authentic Linux distro and want to avoid the learning curve, give Debian (titchy linux) a try. It is fast and it uses the official Debian arm packages. (Iceweasel starts in 30 seconds; Evolution runs and starts in 50 seconds ...)
But of course nothing is perfect even though we always want something more perfect ...

Speed: haven't done any precise comparison, but my feeling is "very close", at least Debian won't feel sluggish at all compared to pdaX

Sound: For now it has limited support. dmesg shows sound module loaded. Have yet to test multimedia (which is not my top priority). But will do some trial this evening.

Work on c3000: Absolutely! As a standard distro Debian is meant to live in an ordinary hard drive (or flash drive). I don't really care about the NAND if Debian does everything for me. I'd rather not worry about the 128MB NAND flash space than wonder how I should make use of the gigabytes of space in the microdrive/flash drive.

Thanks, that's interesting, but I really would like to see a side by side comparison of all the options. For example, how do I know which is best for PIM ? And which one will support my PHS modem card ? etc.

I'll check out the sound later today.  I don't use it for that, don't even know if I have a headset that will work, but I will poke around.

On another thread, someone claimed the 16G drive was not recognized by the titchy kernel, but I think he is still trying a workaround.  

My Z reports lots of alsa stuff in dmesg, so it may well be that sound works.  But IIRC it is kind of hacked.

Well, see for yourself [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=24588]here[/url]. I've proven that too much capuchino is killing even for a Zaurus, at least in my case. But, the good news is a replacement is underway

I just got a 3100 and have tried PDAXii13 - it's pretty good except for the speed. I was excited to try debian (even though rotate does not work?) but I cant get it to install. If someone copied their HD (ie as a backup) and posted it online for me to download - couldn't I just restore my 3100 to a full working debian system? Wouldn't this be easier in general ?

I'm looking forward to trying titchy/debian too, but I doubt it will be noticeably faster than pdax113. in fact I'd guess it was slower, if anything. the appeal, for me anyway, is the simplicity of preconfigured debian feeds, and a good ole' debian system which I've been using in one form or another for a few years.

I agree that Debian is not notieceably faster than pdaXii, but they come very close. I've posted some simple program launch speed test results in the Debian thread. I don't think pdaXii will be noticeably faster, either.
A complete package repository and a documentation system are the biggest advantages.
And you can freely upgrade the system without wiping the disk clean and doing all the setup afresh (like in pdaX).
And there are supposed not many Zaurus-specific tweaking in the user area (though something needs to be done to improve the kernel).

A couple of days ago I took my C860 out from the drawer. It's still in a very good condition. This old friend reminds me of the good time with pdaX Beta1.
Oh yes, pdaX still rocks and would be the best choice for older models without the internal drive.
Actually Debian and pdaX are not really worlds apart, because pdaX can also use Debian ARM packages. Meanie has done a very nice deb2ipk script that can repackage the Debian ARM packages into the pdaX ones, as long as the repackaged programs can get along with the dependencies (basically the libraries) in pdaX.
But of course having a native Debian on a big disk space is another story. Just imagine how cool it is when your Z can directly use apt-get install and apt-get dist upgrade, just like your trusted Debian desktop/laptop ...
