Fn And Shift Usage Changed In R198
« on: October 08, 2007, 01:24:53 pm »
In pdaxrom (pre2.6 kernel) and pdaxii13 I got used to how the Fn and Shift keys were used for things like right clicking, pasting, etc. But in R198 it seems to be reversed. How can I swap them back please?
I looked  at the xmodmap file but I don't think that's the place as I still want them to act as shift and fn buttons for general use. Does that make sense?

I edited the inputconfig script to fix that (shift is middle click and function is right click). I'll get it posted later. You may want to note that, IIRC, I ONLY fixed those keys, so the others are still mapped incorrectly.

Ya, but that's no reason to keep you waiting, so here you go. Just remember I think it's not entirely fixed, so only left shift and fn are correct.

np.
OK, I'll try it out. Thanks. It's the inputconfig.py file were talking about, right?

What do you mean by "only left shift and fn are correct"? What are keys are not correct?

IIRC, I only fixed the keycodes for the left shift and fn keys, so the keycodes for buttons like the kanjis and right shift are wrong, and, should you try to assign any of them to middle/right click, will not function (some other button might, though )

OK, I gotchya.
Ya, I noticed that I can't change the contrast on the screen, probably because the kanjis aren't fixed, right?

I'm not sure. I think it just hasn't been implemented. A way to get around it is to use

Code: [Select]
setfl +
or

Code: [Select]
setfl -
in the terminal. You can also use a number IIRC (1-47) to adjust brightness.

I'm actually planning on hacking at EvilWM again and replacing the wireless stuff with backlight adjustment stuff (Ctlr+Alt+{0|9} = backlight up|down). I'll let you (and everybody else, for that matter) know if/when it's finished.

OK, the tweaking is going well (suspend/resume seems to be working as well ). I'm going to fix a few things up and make an IPK. Stay tuned...

EDIT: OK, it's up in my feed.

the new evilwm ipk works great, I can now change the contrast.
I changed the inputconfig file to yours but the Fn and Left Shift keys still arent fixed.
EDIT: I found where to change it. edit the file:
/etc/sysconfig/x11mousebutts
..and swap the numbers

You need to run the script, set Left Shift and Fn to middle and right click, respectively, to get it to work. I deleted ~/Choices/input.cfg before doing this, but if your method works, go for it. It's good to know there's and alternate method.
