Well, this will open up Slashdot season for the Apple Zelots and their \"Apple Innovaes\" mantra  It\'ll be the \'first 64 bit desktop\' thing all over again - my Mesh Alpha desktop is still pissed about that one

On the other hand it might well be called innovating - taking a fantastic product and actually marketing it so people know it exists.

If this rumor is true (this rumor has been going on since \'98, so I won\'t hold my breath) and it runs either an updated NewtonOS or OSX-lite with an Aqua-like interface, my Zaurus goes up for sale the day it\'s announced.

I had been using Linux for several years here at home but was always frustrated with the desktops available and always needing to tweak scripts and stuff when installing new hardware.  Then I switched to OS X for my desktop and have never been happier.  All the power of Linux with a solid UI and much more software... and the hardware is great.   I still use Linux for my servers, as it runs on cheap, obsolete hardware and is a bit easier to administer.

If Apple does as good a job creating a handheld as they have with their other products, it\'s going to be slick.

Apple makes one hell of a hardware product.  OSX is also pretty sweet in its own right.  As well, Apple will put forward a much better marketing strategy as well as supporting development for it much better.  It will have the US market and commercial software that the Z never had.  I will not get rid of all my Z\'s, but I will have one of these.

If this happens, I would also like to keep my Z as well, but I\'d probably need to sell it just to afford an Apple handheld.
I\'m a little skeptical there will be an Apple handheld as I don\'t think there\'d be a big enough market no matter how great the device is.  I\'m more inclined to believe in the rumors of a 4th gen iPod with video out, 2\" color LCD, and a 50GB drive.  I\'ll be mad if they do release a 4th gen like that, though, as I just bought a 40GB iPod.

I will say, the iPod has an excellent AddressBook and Calendar... better than most handheld PIMs in terms of viewing information.

I guess Steve Jobs was asleep when someone made this decision? (The man has never acknowledged the PDA as a good thing idea)

I would assume that an OSX-lite OS would be the only option.

you guys ought to forget about apple since its all for him and none for open.  Stick with linux you trators!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  DRM, propriatery hardware, software, blah blah blah...its kinda worse than microsoft if you ask me......it plain sucks.

Oh please.  Apple has contributed plenty back to the OSS community (GNU-Darwin for instance), so spread your FUD elsewhere.  Besides, \"trator\" is spelled \"traitor\".
