Trying to import old PalmDesktop .dat files
« on: March 17, 2004, 07:44:47 pm »
Subject basically says it all, my old Palm V left this mortal coil so I replaced it with the SL-5500, running OpenZaurus and all and I\'ve been overwhelmingly happy thus far.  My problem is I\'ve been trying to find a way of importing the data from my last Palm backup on PalmDesktop, which if you\'ve ever used it backs everything up in .DAT form instead of the .PDB files which reside on the Palm itself.

All the conversion tools I\'ve found anywhere seem to require the PDB files, which sadly aren\'t an option since I can\'t even turn the Palm V on to beam them off.  Has anyone managed to import the data from these DATs into their Zaurus, and if so could you possibly explain how?  Thanks in advance.

Linux would have come to the rescue. Before I got rid of my old PalmIII, I synced all my data to my good ole Linux desktop and then used Kitchensync to sync it back. Seems to have worked. You could probably do the same with Windows, though, at least as long as you sync to Outlook.

Linux would probably have fixed the problem if the Palm were still usable, but like I said it\'s completely dead now so the only backup I have are the .DATs leftover from syncing with PalmDesktop.  Luckily my perl-guru girlfriend whipped together a script to convert the addressbook to XML for me, which the Zaurus imported with no problems... she\'s still working on the script for the calendar but I suspect it\'ll only be a matter of time.  Thank goodness for programmers!

There\'s P2Z tool at http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=370 that works with 5500

Unfortunately I\'m lucky to have 5600 so I\'m still looking for something that will let me migrate from my trusty visor deluxe
