Fragmented flash on Sharp ROM 3.10?
« on: March 20, 2004, 03:15:39 pm »
I think I remember seeing a discussion about this on the old DevNet, but I can\'t figure out how to search the archives mirrored here.

I\'m running Sharp ROM 3.10 on my 5500.  Recently I\'ve been getting dialog box messages saying something like \"Flash memory has been fragmented.  Defrag to improve utilitization?\"  I\'ve been answering \"no\" until I understand what is going on.

So, what is going on?  What does this message really mean?  Since the Sharp ROM only installs apps to RAM or SD, I don\'t understand how the flash could have been fragmented in the first place.  (Or is this message referring to my SD card?  That would make more sense.)

Fragmented flash on Sharp ROM 3.10?

Hmm could be wrong here but is it possible that the Sharp ROM rewrites config scripts or something like that to the flash area?

Flash would need a filesystem to handle working with files. This filesystem can become fragmented over time if data changes on it. Sounds like the Sharp ROM could be checking for this every so often and is trying to be helpful.

Once again could be wrong here so take all this with a grain of salt...
