Larger Sdhc Cards On Sharp Rom
« Reply #45 on: June 02, 2010, 05:16:05 pm »
You should probably verify that the card works on a computer with an SDHC slot that you know supports that capacity. There are a lot of flash memory fakes out there recently. They will report a certain size, say 16GB, but will really be something like a 4GB card. If you try to fill it all the way up it will corrupt everything once you pass its actual capacity, in this case 4GB. You don't yet know if the zaurus supports it so first find out if the card works correctly in the first place.

And regarding flashing: Buy a 2GB or less card and format it fat16 OR you can take a larger card and use fdisk or any other partition tool that will work on flash (probably not something in Windows) and wipe the partition table on the flash. Then create a new partition with a size of 2GB or less and format that one fat16.

Doesn't Cacko have a special driver for SD cards (up to 2GB IIRC) ? Have you remembered to remove it ?

It does work with Cacko 1.23 provided you have the original SD card driver and not the 4GB SD update.

However, the change to supporting SDHC has had some side effects for me:

It has made the Z much more sensitive to SD card timings - so some cheap SD cards give timeouts (type "dmesg" in Konsole to see the messages)

It seems to expect the SD card to be partitioned since it tries to automount /dev/mmcda1 rather than /dev/mmcda

MMC card support seems to have gone - can't get any of mine to mount
Current: HP Omnibook 300, Dell XPS 13 Dev Edition, Samsung Tab S 8.4, GPD Pocket
Past: Compaq Concerto, Palm III, TRG Pro, Handera 330, Omnibook 600, AST Ascentia J30, Omnibook 800CT, Palm Tungsten T, Lifebook B2154, Zaurus SL-C1000, Lifebook U810

i cant remove it i think, and i solved the problem installing tetsu kernel and modules before applying the SDHC ipk.

i really havent used an mmc on my c3000 yet and dont believe its going to happen, then it doesnt bother me.
the timeout messages are prompted with the original driver too, at least in cacko 1.23b1 on my c3000.

Thanks both for your responses!!!!
happy to see there are some Z´s users active on this forums.

Glad to have been able to help.

Anyone who has experience with this SDHC driver (i.e. installed it but had to do something to make it work) please consider improving the wiki article at https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Drivers

The point is I'm seeing timeouts for cards that did work with the earlier drivers - but only the cheapies so no great loss.

I just installed the SDHC driver on my SL-C1000 and retired SL-C860 and it seems to be working fine. This will really extend the useful life of my Zaurus since it has become impossible to find any of the older SD cards that will work on the Z.

What size card did you try?

(From what I could gather from the original link to the ipk, it looks like this driver supports upto 32GB cards!  That is really amazing.)

I believe you can still find the "old" SD cards on ebay. I bought a 4gb Transcend x133 speed there.

What I meant by "older SD cards" was cards on Sharp's old verified support list, which hasn't been updated in years and lists no cards larger than 1GB. Before I installed the SDHC driver, I couldn't use any SD memory cards that didn't appear on the list.

I saw that this 16GB Micro SDHC, Class 4 card is currently on sale for $20 (with coupon code EMCKBJJ33 )  and free shipping.
LINK: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820171486

Does anyone know if the Zaurus SDHC driver would/should work with this card? (using a SDHC adaptor, of course)
