Sprint (GrowellUSA) CF2031 Connection Card
« on: April 22, 2004, 06:00:39 pm »
I got a Hitachi G1000 but can\'t stand using Wingtoes PocketPC 2002, so I bought me a Zaurus 5500 and then this CF2031 Connection Card.  The card is supposed to support use with the Zaurus and PocketPC200n.

I haven\'t gotten this working yet today, since I just received the card at work a couple of hours ago.

Anybody know about any traps?

For example, the documentation says that you can\'t  operate the thing without the external battery, as it will kill your \"PocketPC\" because of the power supply\'s architecture.

I hope that this setup works well, because I HATE using Windows.

On the desktop, I\'m mainly using Fedora and Redhat9.

You can download a modem manager for the CF2031 from http://sdgsystems.com (Download section). Do NOT try the CF2031 without a battery on the 5500. You can do it on the 6000, as the CF power is improved. On the 5500, it\'ll \"zap\" your unit to the hard reset state (at least that\'s what happened to me :-)).

Cool.  I was kind of hoping that even the Zaurus 5500 would be different from the PocketPCs in this connection, but \"oh well\".

It kind of stinks that this \"external battery\" is the sine qua non of the CF2031 on a PDA, doesn\'t it?

I mean, why have a separable unit, then?  Just to be able to quickly replace the add-on battery?

This way, I need to have THREE different units together to use the phone card.  Really, why not have the battery in the same unit as the card?

You might want to consider getting a T608 (several are on eBay) and ESN swapping it for your G1000--your unlimited PCS Vision will probably transfer as well, as Sprint doesn\'t appear to have implemented the data cap.  You\'ll be carrying two devices, but yo\'ll be paying less for data, and you\'ll have a voice phone, too...
