Program Recommendations for Debian

Now that many of us have our Gemini and running Debian, perhaps it is good time to start a thread with programs you installed besides those that come with the image file.


Have installed:

- audacity

- calendar (http://gemian.thinkglobally.org/#Calendar) (looks nice; can enter start time of 1:00 through 9:00 AM, but can't enter start time of 10:00 AM...)

- CherryTree (in start menu, but doesn't open...)

- contacts (http://gemian.thinkglobally.org/#Contacts)

- clementine (although kept getting tiny notification message that playlist completed...so, quit program...)

- data (http://gemian.thinkglobally.org/#Data)

- evince

- Geany

- KeepNote

- mc (Midnight Commander)

- taskwarrior (great CLI program)

- vlc (in start menu, but doesn't open...)

- Dolphin file manager (prefer it to pcmanfm)
- Firefox from ubuntu 14.04 .deb (requires glamor disabled to run smoothly)
- Thunderbird
- Dropbox (via exagear)
- Teamviewer (via exagear)
- Steam (via exagear)
- MS Office 2007 (via wine + exagear)
- HeidiSQL (via wine + exagear)
- Asbru Connection Manager (nice tabbed SSH/RDP/VNC GUI)
- VLC (set output to GLES2 and it runs perfect)
- feh in place of pcmanfm for lightweight wallpaper
- NetworkManager in place of connman because VPN and bluetooth work better and I don't have a 4g gemini
- mtrack for nicer touch input (see my other thread)
- xscreensaver in place of gemian-lock
- lightdm in place of sddm because sddm doesn't work without glamor

The Debian image file has Firefox included. Why did you install it from ubuntu?

Never used exagear. Which version of exagear do you use?

Is it the ARM8 version on this page:

How do you set VLC output to GLES2 if it doesn't open?

Yes I like ( Installed dictionaries also ) , but in gemini Abiword and gnumeric  are much faster to type. Libreoffice writer is very slow. Even changing settings that made it a bit faster.

It's the easiest way to get Firefox 60 without installing a bunch of backported dependencies

And yeah the generic armv8 version of exagear

I don't know why VLC isn't opening at all for you, it at least opened and played briefly before changing the setting for me

This is the same glamor issue as firefox and other apps, without it runs much faster

Decided to try exagear and wine....

Ended up with various error messages during wine install about several items that exist in both systems; dbus, binfmt, invoke-rc.d, and update-rc.d.

In addition, now when I try to type characters that are on the front edge of keyboard keys along with using the Fn key, it does not work anymore.

So, something got borked along the way.

I'm thinking it would be good to uninstall wine and maybe exagear and start with new install of each, after I get keyboard mapping fixed.

Any suggestion as to getting keyboard mapping fixed?

Once I do that, should I do 'apt-get remove wine' to uninstall it?

The easy way is to logout back to the sddm login screen, and re-pick the desired keyboard layout from the dropdown, and login again.

If that doesn't work then you've probably got a custom keyboard set elsewhere in the config (eg in lxqt), remove that first then try again.

You can still use the other tool to set the keyboard, then you need to pick the 'Planet Computers Gemini'(planetgemini) as the keyboard model, though it will fix you to that keyboard all the time. The advantage of the intended udev rules way of doing it is so that a USB/BT keyboard plugged in shouldn't pickup the custom gemini layout.

I tried what you suggest, picked English US keyboard from dropdown and logged in. However, no change, keyboard mapping still not correct.

Looked in lxqt settings, but the Planet Computers Gemini is no longer listed...so, something really got messed up somehow...


Given this situation as well as the new tool to multi-boot, I'm thinking it might be good to re-flash to get fresh Debian install as well as be able try Sailfish, which I've never used before. Also, can set Debian as my default boot OS, which would be good.....

Try this : remove .config/lxqt/globalkeyshortcuts.conf. logout and login.
