PLANET COMPUTERS ANNOUNCES AVAILABILTY OF OXI ON GEMINI PDA
Monday 25 February 2019
• OXI transforms Gemini PDA into desktop workstation
• OXI subscription will be available when purchasing official HDMI cable from Planet Store: store.planetcom.co.uk/collections/accessories
• OXI on the Gemini PDA on show at Mobile World Congress 2019 – visit Planet Computers in Hall 7, Stand 7K40

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona: Planet Computers, in conjunction with mobile software developer Auxens, announces the availability of OXI for the Gemini PDA. OXI is an Android-based virtual operating system that enables users to run both mobile and virtual applications in a multi-window desktop environment.

By connecting the Gemini PDA to an external display, OXI provides a fluid desktop user experience: reducing mouse latency and enabling easier access to CPU resources, as well as providing the ability to launch business applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office.

OXI enables users to edit documents and complete multiple tasks simultaneously in different windows, while still being able to use the Gemini’s large 5.99-inch screen – including the ability to take calls and send/receive messages.

The Gemini PDA links to an external secondary HD display and runs OXI via Gemini's USB-C to HDMI accessory. Windows can be resized full screen with the touch of a button for maximum productivity and to streamline workflows. Push notifications appear on the right hand side of the desktop display, so users never miss the latest notifications.

Dr Janko Mrsic-Flogel, CEO of Planet Computers, comments: “The smartphone is essential to the way people work. Gemini was designed to offer something unique to the mobile handset market: a productivity tool that allows users to work and play from a single device with an integrated keyboard. Our collaboration with Auxens takes this to a whole new level – creating a multi-window desktop experience from a PDA.”

Laurent Alaguero, President of Auxens, added: “By connecting your Gemini PDA to a monitor or dock station, OXI allows you to use it as your main computer – meaning your entire digital environment now fits in your pocket.”

OXI for the Gemini PDA will be available when purchasing official HDMI cable from the Planet store.

So, what about those of us who have the HDMI cable already.  Do we get this as well?

OXI subscription?  So - some monthly charge to be able to have more than one Android application on a window on the screen at once when using the HDMI dongle...?  No thanks.

It almost sounds like they're cloud virtualizing this - running the apps video output to a cloud server then sending the resulting 'image' for the external display back to the Gemini?  Sounds like a big waste of bandwidth.

If the Gemini (with or without OXI) is going to see any advertising as a 'desktop replacement', then they really must figure out a way to charge it while connected to the HDMI output AND a USB hub (Keyboard & mouse) - all at the same time.   I understand that there is an effort underway to fix this omission on the Cosmo such that it might be able to charge while connected to it's own hub?

I think a lot of folk are trying a subscription model for software.  If it keeps the product being developed then I see a value in it. Also as a business that would go in a different budget. It may not be a consumer oriented product at this time.

Re Charging on the Cosmo. One of the last things updated was that there’d be the ability to charge via either port.

I would love to see PD. Being able to charge my Mac from the same port I am using for network and hdmi is great.

On a Mediatek device that would be, "Pump Express".  It all depends on the CPU & device manufacturer and their licensed proprietary method they own or license.

USB IF licensee = Power Delivery  (Google Pixel, some Apple products)

Otherwise it appears to be SoC manufacturer dependent.
Mediatek = Pump Express
Qualcomm = Quick Charge
Huawei = Super Charge
OnePlus = WarpCharge
Motorola = TurboPower

Yes, it would be nice if the manufacturers could all use the USB C port in a standardized way.  If their option is to pay a license fee for the 'standard' vs spending half as much to include their own standard...  I suspect, though, that as long as Planet Computers uses the Mediatek SoCs, they are likely going to be tied to using Mediatek's Pump Express instead of licensing Power Delivery from USB IF.

Also just found Leena OS on Google Play. Might give this a try, although it doesn't appear to have been updated in a while.....

Fortunately later versions of PE are PD compliant.  I just want one of those to be used.

Leena OS is a definite no BTW - only supports particular apps. I deleted it after a few minutes of playing with it.
