Which program freeware or cost is best for Video?

I\'m just looking to maybe run Mpeg-4\'s, or any other video files, I currently just have the Zaurus video player, just Mpeg-1. I downloaded VLC, but I don\'t know how to install it.  :wink: Any other programs?, just want them to play video.

mplayer .......  and with that you can use xmms theres an ipkg for an mplayer plugin with that.  And I think theres some pretty good codecs somewhere for Opie Media Player 2...

I thought that programs for OZ, are just for OZ (I\'m new so any clarification would be helpful). XMMS and OpiePlayer2 are both for OZ?
I\'m going to try anyway, but if you can give me the heads up that would be appreciative.

Sorry. I have only used the builtin media player on my 5600.

People have recommended the command-line media player that comes with kino2, but I couldn\'t get it to work. (I get a bus error when I try to run it.) However, other people did get it to work with their 5600. Maybe you\'ll have some luck there?

Finding the right video solution for me is high on my \"todo\" list, but I don\'t know when I\'ll actually get to it. VLC (which I think reads the video on the desktop and streams it over the network to the Zaurus?) sounds intriguing (so I don\'t have to rip and encode my DVDs).

there are qtopia builds also, look in the Sharp OPIE feed, and for XMMS ... I don\'t remember where you go but you need version .5 or older to run on Sharp ROM ... .6 and above are part of the \'OPIE project\' I think

Both mplayer and vlc work well on my  SL-5600 with original Sharp ROM 1.32 and special kernel.

I think you should install one by one.  I will suggest start with vlc.   Have you tried installing vlc?  The instructions listed at vlc website are very straitght forward.  Post your problem here if you cannot get it up.

I have tried opie media player 2 from ZSI but it is crash prone.  The best solution for me is mplayer run outside of qtopia.  The best version I tried so far is the one bundled with kino2.  I\'ve tried xmms with the mplayer plugin (it works with the kino2 mplayer as well ) if gui is important to you.   However, forward and rewind don\'t work very well with xmms.  There is an mplayer gui as well which you can make to work with the kino2 mplayer after a slight change to the source and recompile but pause and resume in qtopia causes mplayer to crash however forward and reverse are ok. Outside of qtopia, it seems to be rock solid.  Haven\'t tried vlc yet.  I too have a zaurus 5600 with pxa250 ROM.  But I am using the zynergy 1.1 ROM with a special kernel zImage that I compiled.    You can check my howto at :

TkcVideo by theKompany is supposed to be very good with AVI\'s, but not sure about MPEGs

I\'ve had success with TkcVideo, albeit at medium resolutions (240x160). the best codec to encode in with that player in my experience is xvid. would love to use something else, though, since tkc doesn\'t handle fast-forwarding and rewinding well at all, and it doesn\'t seem possible to save your place and come back to a video later on.

I bought TkcVideo for my 760 and it was crippleware.  Couldn\'t do fullscreen at all, had these crappy borders.  When asked tkc said fullscreen was impossible due to something or other which was bullshit.  Dr.Z and mplayer-w100 (the one with the ati w100 chip driver) as well as the packed in Sharp MPEG4 player all do fullscreen no problem and I\'ve toyed with them a lot.

It\'s been a few months, but I\'d look carefully before forking out change for tkcVideo for one of the VGA units (considering those crooks even refused to admit having a fake, crippled fullscreen mode was a problem).  

Of the other players I mentioned I prefer mplayer with MPEG2 (which lets you pump the bitrate up since it\'s easier to decode).  The Sharp player does really nice as well, although it requires encoding in MS ISO MPEG4.  The colors are really vivid, but I haven\'t figured out if that\'s due to overlayed playback or something the Windows Media Encoder does beforehand.

Dr.Z performed well, handily beating mplayer at some more normal MPEG4 trials before I got my settings down for mplayer.  Dr.Z can\'t play MPEG2, though, so once I figured out that was superior for such underpowered devices I didn\'t finish comparing those two.

One would think that Sharp would come out with a player that supports mpeg4, although I\'m not holding my breath.

I\'ve tried a lot,kino2 0.3 has a none working mplayer.
at last I found kino2 0.22 is best for me.

Personally I\'m running tkcVideo on my 860 (and my 5600) and it performs flawlessly.  Full screen on the 860 in landscape mode.  I\'ve got a 4Gb Hitachi that I\'ve got 8 full-length movies on and it\'s wonderful for long flights (and longer waits !).  Just my two cents worth.

Thank you all for your input!! I\'m just curious does anyone know if there is a quicktime player for Zaurus/Linux, cause I have it on my mac and it handles a few formats, I can encode in Mpeg4, would these be playable on the Zaurus? I use VLC for just about everything, a full useable version would be a very useful player.
