new ROM = new forum
« on: November 19, 2003, 11:08:11 pm »
So I figured that we should keep up with the times and create a new forum for Sash\'s up and coming X11 ROM for the C7x0 series....

I know the ROM hasn\'t been officially released, but apparently people are already loading beta (or alpha?) versions...   I\'ve loaded it on my 760, and it\'s just cool so far...

I sent Sash an email asking permission to mirror the files here on the ZUG....

I pretty sure it an alpha. Lot\'s of stuff doesn\'t work. The wireless config, etc. But it\'s fun to play with and shows great potential. The ROX desktop is well suited for a PDA device, but I haven\'t been able to figure out to do the equavalent of a right mouse click to access a lot of the features of the system. I was able to install vnc a server with the hope I could use my PC to right mouse click to configure the desktop, but no go. Couldn\'t get a simple left mouse click to work as a screen tap.

It\'s probably different as you\'ve got large screens, but when I had an X11 ROM running on my Z (GPE on my 5500) although it looked cool, there weren\'t many apps around.

I know I can cross-compile stuff (and have done), but in terms of PIM apps I was a little lost (the GPE stuff wasn\'t able to sync).

What are you guys planning on using?

http://www.spy.org/zaurus/screenshots
or, by ip:
http://69.13.149.159/zaurus/screenshots/

on the left is sharp/cacko/OZ(?) ... on the right is zdebian.

both running at the same time (ya, 64mb ram)...  you can run
a tinyx or something under qtopia -- not sure if you can go
the other way or would want to... but, I guess if there\'s an
X11 (only?) rom, then it would seem to cut out all those
qtopia apps.

I would run the X11 rom only to see what it had to offer.
It seems to me that there is enough going on with qtopia
that it wouldn\'t be worthwhile to lose the ability to run qtopia
apps.

If the X11 roms also (somehow) allows for qtopia stuff to be
run, then I\'d probably prefer this.

qtopia (opie?) just doesn\'t do it for me.  maybe I just don\'t
know the benefits behinds the scenes yet.

I agree.  My main gripe with qtopia is that I can\'t easily scale applications down from fullscreen and have two or more running apps visible at the same time.  X11 doesn\'t help much if the apps (or their eqiuvalents) aren\'t there.

You\'re absolutely right... without the apps, the ROM probably won\'t cut it, for me at least.  Though I have to say that I love seeing it run on my 760.  I will be flashing back tonight... I need my pim apps and connectivity back...

I have high hopes for it!

so, I flashed it last night and I have to say like offroadgeek, I just love seeing x11 run on my c700!

I know that is still in it\'s alpha/beta testing phase but I think it\'s going good! I can connect wirelessly to the internet and so far I\'ve only had the chance to install one app. (xmahjongg)

so far so good!

don't ya just love software that presumes everyones got their clock set right rather than using the system clock.  "Gee, I'm writing a program.  What time do I want to use?  My own system time, or just some random time that some post says it was sent at. "

The RC2 is almost done and it will be released for public - we would prefer as many people use Bittorrent as possible, of course there will also be 2-3 ftp/http mirrors available :-)
