PocketPC 2003 on Z?
« on: May 28, 2004, 02:21:22 pm »
Has anyone been crazy enough/had the skills to try to get any pocketpc roms working at all on a Z? (C750,760,860?) I see the toshiba uses the ati W100 chipset for video as well, I\'m wondering if theres a way to do a nand restore with pocketpc image and have it semi working.

I\'m sure I\'ll probably get blasted for this, but I love the hardware and the software I find kind of lacking for the Z, compared to PPC s/w availability.

I don\'t want to give up Linux, but agree about the apps.  If the H/W is the same then where is WINE-CE (Or how about WINCE) for the Z?

Take a look here

Summary: Get a PPC, genius.
Open source RTS.  It's still in the very early stages, so testers are quite welcome.

I used a Pocket PC for a long time and I think the Linux OS on the Z makes for a much better device.

There are a few applications that I would like to see on the Zaurus, Repligo for example which I used a lot of viewing all kinds of documents. I really thought I would miss Pocket Informant which is a great PIM application. As it happens, KOPi is proving to be pretty much as good for me. Can\'t wait for the address book version to be available as well.

We\'ll soon have a proper word processor, the Hancom spreadsheet isn\'t too bad and our browsers are OK so there\'s really no need to want the PPC OS on a Z.

Needless to say, if Sharp made a Pocket PC version of the clamshells it would be a huge seller.

What would be really interesting is if the mono group could do a version of the .NET Compact Framework classes so that the newest .NET apps for PPC could run on the Zaurus environment the same way Java apps can.

That\'s one of the most insightful comments I\'ve read recently.  I heard that the reason they went with Linux in the first place was because they disagreed with MS over licensing terms (at the time, Microsoft was being hard-asses about hardware specs and wouldn\'t let them include a keyboard. obviously things have changed).  But now, Sharp probably could license PocketPC, sell a device with equivalent specs to the C860 in the western market, and be very successful.  Of course, we would expect that it could be reflashed with Linux.

I looked into this as well waaaay back when I had a SL-5000D which at the time had some really bad applications.  It would\'ve been nice to flash PPC 2000/1 on it to make it usable for work and then have the ability to flash it back to Linux when I wanted to play.  Needless to say it wasn\'t going to work.

I could see an advantage to having a dual-boot option on the Z.  The C760/C860 should have ample flash space for both ROMs.  It would certainly make it easier to interface with a lot of applications that only support PPC or Palm (e.g. Siebel) and I have a ton of Palm/PPC programs a few of which currently are better than alternatives available for the Z.

Just to speak this way I don\'t think sharp will risk their names just to use Pocket PC! They probably had enough just making Telios (Win DosCE!)

Why ???
All beauty of Sharp\'s Zauruii is it\'s only (well nearly only) handheld computers with Linux.
If you like PocketPC there are tones of others manufactures and models.

Couldn\'t disagree more, it\'s hardly insightful, just indicative of how people can be tempted by shiny glittery things, it would just make the Zaurus yet another PPC in the great bland sea of PPCs, I don\'t care how good the hardware is, if it runs PPC it\'s crap as far as I am concerned.  You could put the MS logo on a turd and people would lap it up.

What makes the Z so good is that it is quite exclusive and comes with Linux, if it had come with PPC, I would never have bought it, you\'ll find the majority here would probably agree. :? I think some people just don\'t get why the idea of a Linux handheld was so important to the Linux community for so long. If you have room for Microsoft\'s stuff in your life, buy a PPC! There are plenty of machines, some even \'nicer\' than the Z.

This question comes up so often it is really disturbing, with the vast mass of PocketPC junk out there, I cannot understand the logic in even asking the question in the first place.  I will never understand the logic of someone hunting down a Z - which is not exactly a common machine - and then asking why Windows can\'t be put on it. It\'s time these questions were banned.

Actually I think we kind of agree on this.

I\'m not saying that it would be a good idea to have the PPC OS on the Zaurus, just that many PPC owners are sick of the tablet, four button designs they have. There has been no innovation for years and the first clamshell, the Motorola one, is still not on the market.

From a technical point of view it would be a big backward step for Sharp to build a PPC version. From a sales point of view I\'m sure it would be a success. Remember, the people here would not be the target market and you\'re right very few, if any, of the ZUG members would be interested. There are, however, a heck of a lot of PPC owners who would love to get their hands on the C series hardware - just so they don\'t own another piece of PPC junk. It would have the MS logo but would be better than a turd, how could it fail?

Anyway, enough of Windows, what I need to do now is figure out how to get Linux installed on my old Dell Axim.

Hi, I am a Linux geek and also using windows. I think there is a problem, if an OS is exlusively for what ever. In the case of sharp, I would be happy if sharp would sell the Zs in other countries, for example Germany where I live. If they had sold a branch of the camshells with Windows, it would be more easy to buy a used camshell for a nice price. In Japan you can buy a used c700 for about 280k Yen. In Germany you have to pay at least 500Euros for a used one. The other thing is, the linux developement on the z would be maybe at a prototypicall stage, if the Z where also to get with pocketpc OS. So the question can not be answered...
Cheers,
Sam
