Greetings, and a WiFi question
« on: June 01, 2004, 08:33:48 am »
Hi fellow ZUGers.

I\'ve been lurking for awhile, but just wanted to say hi and thank everyone on this board for the wealth of information provided.  Based on the knowledge and experience of the posts on this board, I was easily able to choose the best Z for me (5500), and get all the apps I wanted up and running in record time (incl. OZ, Opera, GAIM, NetHack).
I decided to move away from the PPC platform after getting royally burned with my last Jornada.  I purchased a spiffy Jornada running PPC 2002 when it first came out.  However, after the HP/Compaq merger, HP dropped support for my unit altogether (while it still being equiv. to their current product lineup), and they refused to offer an upgrade to the latest PPC OS when it came out (despite offering it for other models/iPaqs, and despite the fact that it was 100% technically feasible, AND despite the fact that upgradability was a selling point for the model).  Anyways, there was no way I was going back to Palm, and being a Linux enthusiast (yay Gentoo), the Z seemed like a logical choice.  I was a little concerned about Sharp\'s apparent complete disregard for the US market, but was totally psyched when I saw how wildly active the Z community is.  The fact that I could easily upgrade my Z to any number of Roms, including completely community driven ones, was the clincher.  MS and HP can take someone elses $ now

Anyways, thanks again everyone for all the info posted.  Before disappearing back into the void of lurkerdom though, I did have a quick question.  I am using an old Symbol CF WiFi card in my 5500 running OZ 3.3.5.  The card works perfectly most of the time, but sometimes, inexplicably (usually after swaping back in my CF mem card then back to WiFi), the WiFi card completely ceases to function.  Its still recognized when I eject/insert it, but the WiFi icon won\'t come up and no networking.  Usually a reboot of the Z fixes the problem, but I had one instance where I had to reflash OZ to get it back up.  I know the card is good because it has, and continues to, work fine in my -1 cursed Jornada from hell.  Is this a known bug, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

-Wolf

This is a known bug. OZ 3.3.x is no longer maintained, so we won\'t fix that in 3.3.x.
We found the source of the problem though and fixed it in the OpenZaurus kernels built by OpenEmbedded.

Thanks for the info, Mickeyl!
Where can the OpenEmbedded roms be downloaded, and what is the current version?

Thanks!

There are no OpenEmbedded based ROMs yet, since we are still working on integrating deviceisms. The next release will be OpenZaurus version 3.5.1.
You can build one yourself using OE (http://openembedded.bkbits.net) using the instructions @ http://openembedded.org
You can also build just a kernel and try to get the modules over to your old installation.
