quest for the perfect X11 setup
« on: July 05, 2004, 06:20:19 pm »
Hi all,
I'd like to collect in this thread a set of suggested setup for our pdaxrom clamshells.

If some pdaxrom users describe their setup with their software and settings hints maybe we will be able to obtain the "almost perfect X11 conf".

Obviously if your setup isn't tuned and satisfactory you should not leave it in a post  ,or you should leave some peculiar suggestion on this or that detail, in order to avoid a mix of good and ugly setups

Maybe we could think about specifying in the title and/or at the beginning of any post if it will speak about:

1) SUGGESTED SETUP
2) SPECIFIC HINT

Other posts will be automatically intended as comments or common opinions about other posts.

let's start

I'm not sure this makes sense.

The nice thing about unix is that you ahve a choice.. you have freedom.

the bad thing about unix is that it takes 1/2 a clue to figure out what to do.

If you want clone desktops -- why not try qtopia/opie?

With X11, the draw (at least for me) is that I can tailor the set up to my
needs.

Scott
ps:  http://zaurus.spy.org/screenshots/scottyelich/pdaXrom/jpg/
but I don't have function keys, etc.  When the next release of pdaXrom comes out,
I'll configure another way.

that's not the point.
Zaurus shouldn't be just a toy.

So, for users who like to make their zaurus efficient and functional could be quite really precious knowing about a set of browser/mail clients/remote apps/editor that is fast and/or light and/or stable and/or nice-features-flavoured.

We are not speaking about personalization - that is up to any zaurist  - but tuning and well-managing.

We all think that those posts about configuring firefox or abiworld or scummvm or choosing and comparing different browsers and clients are really usefull, don't we?

So organizing those info cannot be worse than that, don't you agree?

I hope I had better explained this thread intent

thank you for the opinion, though; you gave me the occasion to be clearer, that is always good.

Hi
The standard PIM apps:
http://www.jakob-zabel.com
There you can download dlume, an addressbook, minido, a TODO list manager and leafpad, a lightweight Text Editor (notpad clone)

cheers, jabbath

I've deleted this post, since I've now migrated to pdaXrom.

Heres my current setup which may give some ideas:

X11 Desktop:
* ROX desktop, filer (obvously) AND pinboard. (As a former RISC OS user, I like the 'desktop' feel of it)
* Openbox WM - standard but I want to change the default theme, haven't found out how yet.
* Matchbox panel, because I haven't looked into changing that yet, ROX panel isn't as good IMHO.
* xkbd - on screen keyboard
all with a gorgeous wallpaper, custom designed by mentat_bashar - cheers mate.
I also disabled screen rotation, I don't like it, it just mangles windows.

Development:
* zgcc - still trying to get it to work though

Productivity:
* Abiword
* Gnumeric
* Calcoo - RPN calculator I compiled
* xPDF - too slow for me though
* OpieReader - eBook reader - been using it for a long time under Qtopia and on my old 5500
* SciTE -  I do not like it, going to try one as Jabbath recommended

Graphics:
* GIMP - of course
* Dia
* Gqview
* Xshodo - for Japanese calligraphy

Net:
* Dillo
* Sylpheed
I think the other choices are just too intensive/slow for use, plus I like them.

PIM:
* Korganiser/KoPi
* Dlume - thanks Jabbath

NOT forgetting: XMMS which I use all the time, Doom, Frozen Bubble and Mahjongg

Hope this helps a bit.

-Francis
