Open Embedded
« on: July 08, 2004, 09:50:19 am »
Hi all,

Have just read the Open Embedded News Letter Open Embedded Newsletter and I was left with a feeling of enthusiasm for Linux on my Zaurus that I've felt lacking for a while.

I quite like the look of the GPE screenshots and was wondering if anyone knows where there is a beta or even an alpha of Open Embedded for the Z5500 so I can have a little play or perhaps even help bug test.

Ok, looks like there were links and I just skipped them in my brain

Is Collie the Z5500?

And it looks pretty scary on the ftp. If anyone can decypher it and tell me where the ROM images are then that'd be a help as I'm uselss with this kind of thing

http://handhelds.org/~pb/oe/images/ contains some stuff, I have no idea if it is usable or not though. I'm afraid we don't need more testers - we would need some people capable of debugging and fixing stuff - see OzTODO3.5.1 in the Wiki.
Cheers,

Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer

I had a look at the link, but I didn't really understand what I saw. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait for the official release like everyone else

I downloaded the 2 files in the collie (sl5500) directory, changed their names to zImage and initrd.bin, put them on my CF, flashed using the normal method, and hey got a nice surprise.   Looks nice but don't know if anything works.

Do this on a spare or backed up Z cos you'll lose everything

Did the same, it worked quite well. A bit buggy, not many apps, a little bit confusing layout, but I think it has a lot of potential!! :-)

Me likeee

Am looking forward to the first official release.

Please please please OpenEmbedded team, make it so that we can use a word processor and spreadsheet, even if they have to be the Hancom ones......

Anything similar would be nice.
