DnK, are you working from the CVS or from a snapshot? There are some speed improvements to the snapshot but page up will always be a bit slow as it works quite hard to find a \"resynchronisation\" point to make sure that the formatting is right (depending on format). Also, some formats (gzip primarily) don\'t support random access but even in these you shouldn\'t have page down problems.
Have you an example file to try?

I compiled the snapshot version you\'ve sent to me.... and the only thing to say and complain is the speed of pgdown... maybe that\'s because of pure graphics display performance of X11 rom w/ c760.... but anyway there are a delay of about 1 second after the key tap.

I haven\'t ever seen it running on a C760 but I haven\'t heard that it is particularly slow. Maybe someone who has used it under Qtopia on a C760 can comment? I did offer to re-compile opie-reader for the xscale at one point but the person I offered said that it was fast enough without that little bit of extra optimisation.
It should be possible to pre-prepare the next screen load of info in the background (that is what I used to do on the epoc version) but as I hadn\'t had adverse comment about page down I haven\'t bothered (page up is another matter, though).
There have been big differences in performance depending on how QT refreshes the screen. Maybe QT under X11 is less efficient, or lazier, about doing screen refreshes? It works okay in fullscreen on my 400MHz laptop at 1280 x 600 which is 10 times the resolution with a not much more powerful processor (Crusoe vs XScale?).
I believe Sash is going to have a go at compiling it. Maybe he knows some magic optimisation options which will help. If not I\'ll see about adding some extra instrumentation so we can see what is happening.
Unless you are using ppms format or lots of graphics the type of document shouldn\'t matter too much.

In that case I don\'t think any kind of read ahead buffer or in fact any kind of optimisation in opie-reader will help much. Page down requires a complete refresh of the text window so there isn\'t much scope for optimisation there, either.

It may be worth trying double buffering and in DrawStraight (IIRC) in QTReader.cpp drawing to an offscreen bitmap and then bitblt\'ing it all in one go.

Let me know if you want me to try that.

It would be nice to try... unfortunately i flashed back to original ROM due to lack of PIM applications for X11/Cacko rom. so i can\'t check it rightnow.

It looks like the slow redraw on X11 might get better with double buffering. I\'ve implemented it for Qtopia and it makes quite a difference so if anyone wants to retry with the double buffered version, just let me know.

Okay. I\'ve still got your e-mail address. I just need to tidy up a couple of things I broke during my last tweak and then I\'ll send you a snapshot.

Wow! If works fine... still a little bit slow on pgdown, but it\'s usable anyway. Redraw\'s perfect.

Thanks!

Any chance of putting it in a feed somewhere? Then I can direct requests for an X11 version to the feed.

yes please, let\'s get this ipk on a feed!   you can even just upload it to the ZUG downloads (X11 Packages ] Applications) area that way Laze can add it to the cacko feed.

can\'t wait to try it!

just approved it... so it\'s up there!

I\'ve just downloaded and installed it... the ipk installs great, and you even made an icon for it in the apps folder!.

though I\'m having some troubles viewing my existing plucked ebooks...  they are just showing garbly-gook... let me try some others.

Thanks!
