pdaXrom just doesnt work on my C860
« on: July 30, 2004, 06:23:27 pm »
I am fed up!!!  I have installed dozens of times and it just doesnt work.

I can get a clean install - but (as an example) when I install gnumeric it just doesnt work.!  I have installed gnome-base-libs of course but it still doesnt work.

Other packages don't work also, although some, like Abiword, seems to work quite well.

I cant get networking to work, the new new wireless card is supposed to be supported but it still doesnt work.

OK so can I get Abiword to print? No. I would love it to print through the infrared port - but no way.  Imagine, write a letter, point it at the printer and press print.  Maybe through the network but as I say netwroking doesnt work.

And, how do I see the errors that inhabit my Zaurus? Only when I boot do I see any errors and they flash past too fast to record what they are? In SuSE there is a terminal screen where all the error messages display (F12 I think) where is it on the Zaurus?

I am so frustrated. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK had my moan but please someone  can we get some help here !!!

Whoa, that's pretty cool. Imagine I just say into the microphone that's connected to my Zaurus that I want something real great, like to get a week report written for me, and my Zaurus would do it at once, via the infrared maybe, or with a funky networking of some sort. Imagine all the people living life in peace! Imagine no possesions, I wonder if you can, no need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man, imagine all the people sharing all the world... You may say Im a dreamer, but who cares, SuSE has an F12 thing, so it is all real true.

But you know, in reality things are a bit more complicated. Nobody promised you heaven on Zaurus, really. And while the pdaXrom is a nice effort, you have to compare it with the alternatives to understand it. And no, life's not perfect, and yes, everything got screwed up sometimes.

Well, really, I would just suggest you to relax and get the steam out. And while it's not all that easy, all the problems could eventually be solved if there is a need. Having a cold head always helps.

Try running the programs in question from the command line, you're almost certainly missing libs. Do this and you'll know which ones.

Not sure about the networking issue. More info might help.

Philvs

I'll give you some sympathy.  I also tried pdaxrom on my 860 and haven't got it to work yet. I know it can be frustrating.  Unfortunately I can't spend a lot of time fixing things.

I haven't got wireless to work at all, but I did get a lot of packages to work.  The main problem was getting all the library dependancies sorted out.  I printed the packages file so I could work through the dependancies manually.

I'm waiting for the next release and using tkc for now.  I really like the look of pdaxrom and it looks like the next release is going to be cleaner to install (for linux newbies like me)

To answer your last question first, "dmesg" after you boot will replay the boot messages, use "dmesg | more" if you want to see a screen at a time.

I wonder if you installed a bad copy, or from faulty media. My 860 is pretty happy with pdaX. But I haven't tried Gnumeric or printing or anything with the infrared. My wireless card works fine. You might post the specifics of your configuration of the card and your base station, so we can see if those look right. Have you tried networking through the USB cable? That works well for me too.

Had one of the graphical text editors installed (think it was nedit) and it worked fine, but then they packaged joe, my fave, so have been using that for everything - also works fine. So do Firefox and hnb, and - once I got the current copy from the main site rather than the old version lingering about - kismet. Mostly been using the Z with hnb, which I've tweaked considerably, and it's proving very productive in this format.

Just haven't looked what the options are in printing support for the Z. Printing can be a PITA in all versions of *nix, since there are a half-dozen different ways to set it up, all of which require special packages....

Anyhow, if we're going to help you, you'll need to slow down and work through one problem at a time.

Thanks to all those who replied. My frustration has got the better of me and I have gone back to a more normal rom (cacko). With embedded QT. There is no solution which is perfect for me (although I might try and get a dual boot system running) So have decided to stick with cacko for a while untill I get the urge (or the new Xrom appears) to try again.

Once again many thanks to those who replied with (mostly) helpful support.
