Zaurus as laptop replacement

Hi!

Sorry to bother, but I'm looking into geting a laptop replacement. Last time I bought the Jornada 720, but that one ende up as a paper weight.

- The USB host on the SL-6000. Anyone had any luck with connectiong mice and keyboards thru this? What about external DVD/CDROM players?

- The CF, VGA adapter: can this be used to an external monitor. Not only pressentasions apps like on the palm pdas, but as a "full blown" external monitor setup?

What I would realy like is a pda that can also be used as a light workstatios - so no data need to be syncronised to and from a pda. I tried this with both the Sony Ericcson P900 and HP Jornada, but in the end it was to much hassle.

The goal is to have an external monitor, mouse and keyboard at home and all my data only on the Zaurus.

Oh! one last thing: any norwegians who have any experience with importing the Zaurus to Norway? Any problems with our special characters?

I am currently typing this message on my Logitech cordless wireless pro usb keyboard.  The mouse does nothing though dmesg shows:

I have also been able to hook up an external usb cd-rw that I was able to read a cd.  I really have not tried hooking up more then one thing at a time as of yet since I do not have a usb hub.  

I will admit that I usually uses my Targus IR keyboard everyday. I would like to at some point get a cf video card and usb hub and try using my SL-6000 like you want to do.  I have to say so far I really love my SL-6K, it gets used everyday, but I am a Unix admin and spend most of my time on other servers using Qkonsole to do my work.

I have found the Zaurus to be a great laptop replacement for me.  I can read and edit both word and execle documents along with being able to view Powerpoint documents.  With Gaim and qazoo to have icq, aim, and yahoo instant messages.  For me it works though I am nto sure if it woudl work as a laptop replacement for everyone, though to me it is the best thing I have found.

Actualy I'm a unix sysadmin myself and like you, most work gets done thru some sort of console connection.

Intresting that usb- keyboar works and hopefully mice will be added in the future. The only problemt now is the external monitor thingy. I read a little more in the 6000 hardware/accessorie forums and there were examples of people with working, external, usb storage.

I'v also looking into those OQO and Vulcan FlipStart computers, but so far thees are not aveiable and upon release this machines would become insanly expencive (I think). The Jornada 720 was suppose to fix all my small computer needs, but it had no flash memory and was quickly discontinued bye HP. It's collecting dust and its stuck with Windows.

Hopefully someone has testet the CF, VGA adapter.

Hi prn,

The CF vga card will only give about 1 frame a second due to the interface. I'm not sure if someone has done it, but there was talk about using it with an X-server.  If you want to have an external monitor, then get yourself an old laptop or computer and use VNC...

Thanks for the tip about VNC. I have used this with linux befor, but not much. I'll look into if this will give me a solution that works for me.

After reading som more about the CF, VGA card its mostly for running pressentasions and mirroring the pda display. There is solutinons called display-to-go thats more ment to be a graphics card. I have found two diffrent, but they are pc- cards and said little about support for the Zaurii.  From the little information I managed to find, it seems to me that thees types of cards can give dual- head setups to laptops.

Anyone imported Zaurus devices into Norway?

VNC is excellent for the external monitor thing. It would be even better if the mouse cursor from the PC(client) was visible on the Z
