Root partition size question - min vs max
« on: August 19, 2004, 09:12:33 am »
Hi, I'm a little confused.  I'm loading the new pdaxrom (which looks fabulous BTW) and I see a lot of different ideas about what size to repartition to.

some try to get the minimum size ~ 40 megs, some want to use the max ~121 megs.

What are the pros and cons.  Is minimum better for loading more apps vs user files or visa versa or what?

I was not able to get the rom to work with 50 or 52mb on a 700.
rc1 worked with 50.

I was able to get rc2 to work with 40mb /
the install appears to use about 37MB (ie: my / is stuffed)

I have not sacrificed my 760 yet, so I can't give any suggestions there.

i used ashley's cript in order to have a single partiion on my c750 : is RC2 compatible with this ? If yes, it means you have 58 368 k to run... wich is not too much if you want to use your Z as more than a pda...

Yes, I installed RC2 on a single root partition which was previously created by the Ashley's installer with no problems at all. That was on C760 though, I guess you'll need to use the kernel for C760 on your C750 when installing RC2 in order to mount the partition that big.

There's a new option in the installer under "Flash Tools" or something that lets you use all of your flash ram.  After running that (and maybe rebooting, I can't remember) you can set your partition size to the maximum.

That said, when I did that I had problems with several programs which were trying to put things in my (very small) /home partition.  I think this problem can be solved with some simlinks, but I didn't really try that hard to fix it, I just reflashed to the default size and everything works great now.

The above is for a 760.  I have no clue what will happen on other models.

The ideal setup would be to a maximum sized root and then create a simlink to somewhere else in your root partition as /home (I think)...then your stuff will all go to the same partition.  This will eliminate problems where you have plenty of space on one partition, but the other is full.  That's my plan for when 1.1.0 final comes out, since I'll probably have to reflash anyway.

Hope this helps!
