New Fictional Book (Z4CK), hacker uses Zaurus
« on: August 21, 2004, 09:40:20 am »
Hi All,

Thought you might just be interested in a new cyber thriller based around Duncan Steele.  A hacker who creates the 'magic bullet' that lets him by-pass any network security.   Duncan uses Z4CK meaning Zaurus-ACK, compiled on the OpenZaurus OS to do this.    Have a look, the first half of the book is free!  The second half only £2 in PDF.  The paperback will be published at the end of Sept.   http://WWW.Z4CK.ORG

Cheers,

Kev

Sounds like a cool idea for a book.  These little machines are amazing!

This is an excellent idea.  Any change you could add a copy in Plucker format though?

I find this much easier to read on a Z using Opie-Reader

I've been asked to convert the book into a couple of different formats.  If anyone has any suggestions for any further formats I'll have a look at them as well.  I'll certainly look at adding a download for plucker format, and Palm Doc, or Palm Reader format too.   Look out for that around Friday.

I had my Z stolen at the end of May during some work I was doing for our Boston office, luckily I had removed the CF card that contained Z4CK, and had onviously backed it up otherwise it may have been gone too!

If anyone else has another reader that makes it easy to view the book, and would like a conversion, just add it here...and I'll do my best.

Cheers,

Kev

Hi all,

Apologies for the site being down.  I had a major power failure which trashed the hard disk.  It's rebuilt now.  I've added plucker and palm doc versions for download if anyone would like to grab them.  I also have the full version in plucker, its the one I would recommend for a PDA.  QPDF2 is OK on the Zaurus if you must read it in PDF format, but Opie Reader is good for plucker.

Anyway, thanks for the interest, come and have a look at your leisure.

Cheers,

Kev

I am on chapter 4 and very pleased with quality of the work.  Very Queens English "feel" to it  which takes a bit getting used to, but makes it seem more "real" in its setting (likes Tyres, instead of tires, and lifts, etc, etc)

Haven't even gotten to the meat of the story yet, but very well done so far.  Looks like I will be buying part two if my interest (and time) hold up.

Great work.

I highly recommend this ebook (and the free opie reader) to all...plenty to read before you have to make the huge ( ) 2GBP commitment.

Top notch !

Hi Omicron and Doc and all the other Zaurus users out there.

Thanks for your comments on Z4CK, they made my day.  I wasn't sure if anyone out there would enjoy it, but my friends said it was OK, so I thought it'd be good if other folks got to the chance to read it too.   The feedb4ck has been good, and I've had a lot of support from the Linux and Zaurus communities.

Finally, the paperb4ck will be out on time at the end of September.   I'm trying to keep the cost as low as possible, so its looking like £7.99 including world wide postage and packing, but its not completely confirmed.  As soon as it is I'll post here.

Thanks again,

Kev

sorry, I haven't had a chance to download it yet... but do you have a logo or cover for the book?  I'd love to showcase it on the main zug site for all to see.

Hi,

I have got a cover design.  I did the cover design and the chapter illlustrations myself using Gimp 2.0, its really good for all sort of fancy design touches.   You will be able to find the cover on my website, at the top of the home page, or you can also download a reduced scale cover from Linuxdevices.com at

http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS3666456645.html

They also did a good piece there.  I've finally got the the price for the paperb4ck for those who like that sort of thing.  Â£7.99 including p&p

Hope this is helpful, thanks again.  A showcase on the main zug site would be great.

Cheers,

Kev

Going slightly OT, but I'm bored :-D

Is there any other type of English? If so, perhaps it ought not be called English. :-) (dons white-coloured heat proof suit as part of his defence against the flames; sits down in his favourite aluminium chair in the centre of his flat, well away from inflammable tyres... yep, it's getting a bit tired now, I'll stop)

Here is another version in a different English dialect...(Redneck?)

He whips on the pansy white suit that those pencil-necked geeks told him would keep him from frying his butt off, and sits down in his broken lawn chair in the center of his double-wide trailer, well away from the fireworks the neighbor's terrorist boys are always shooting off...and pops a cold one...only the best...Millwaulke's Best.
