Puzzled by Network problem
« on: August 23, 2004, 11:52:22 am »
OK, I'm out of ideas.    I can't get my work PC to connect to my Z. I've never had any problems before with the other ROMs I've used.

I used the USB utility to setup the default IP address. Hotplug works after I plug in the cable ifconfig shows the correct IP address, and the icon for the network connection shows up in the sys tray of W2K. But I can't ping in either direction.

Anyone have any ideas of what I might try?

TIA,

Jerry

Firewall?

Does it work on mass storage?
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

No firewall on my PC and yes, mass storage works fine. Weird, eh?

Update> It's a W2K issue    I booted into my Slackware partition and SSH works fine and both PC and Z talk fine together.

OK, this just confirms how aggrevating Winblows is

After much futzing about I determined that W2K didn't like the DHCP option being active on the network connection to my Z. If I assign it the IP of the Z, I can ping the Z. I don't know why this would work as putting in a static IP address in the properties of the connection would make me think I'm connecting 192.168.129.201 to 192.168.129.201  which is born out in that I can ping that address from my Z but not the IP of my PC.  You can see my knowledge of networking is rudimentary at best

Sigh... and of course SSH doesn't work, it does allow login attempts but won't accept the password. I'm assuming this is related it is getting loging request from the same IP address as the host (not sure just pure conjecture)

Now in the last pdaXrom I was able to connect with the properties of the network connection having the DHCP option checked. Something has changed on the pdaxrom side. Any network gurus have any ideas on how I can get my Z to let W2K know it's out there at it's specific IP address? (and no I can't dump winblows as I'm forced to use it at work)

Cheers,
Jerry

Try setting both sides to static addresses:

Z: 192.168.129.201
PC: 192.168.129.200

I'm running with RC2 on my C750 at the mo and it works fine with XP.

Thanks lardman:

My pc at work is static IP & I have no say in what the address is. At home I'm experiencing the same issue with my XP box. I may try setting my XP to static to see if it helps.

Anyone else having problems with winblows connection? Or is just me?
Thanks,
Jerry

No, you misunderstood (I think); my fault for not explaining more clearly.

I assume your PC is attached to a network (with static address which you can't alter); therefore it has an IP address associated with that ethernet/wifi adaptor. This is what people call the computer's IP address, but this is misleading as a computer can have lots of IP addresses if it has lots of ethernet adaptors ...

When you plug in the Z USB cable, this looks like a new ethernet adaptor to the PC, therefore you want to give this 'adaptor' a static address. This won't interfere with your existing connection, etc.

Thanks indeed, I am a bit thick. And you were right, setting a static IP for that connection was all it took. It's working on my home XP box now. I'll try it at work today.
Thanks for your help lardman!

I figured it was user error & not the ROM. Now if someone would compile the latest version of  KO/PI I'd be a very happy camper (I tried following the example compile with the SDK and didn't get past the ./configure step    )

If I connect my Zaurus with the USB cable and set it to Network mode in the ROM, the WinXP recognizes it as a C860, however it's a C700 and it ask for some driver. Nothing new in the Network window.

Do you have any idea why this is happen and how to solve it?

It happens (I'd guess, as the same thing happens with storage_fd) because net_fd has either been lifted from, or compiled for, the 860. It should work fine on the 700 however.

The drivers are the Sharp ones which are required to run the usb-ethernet connection. They should be on the CD you received with the Z.

I think I better make it on Debian.  But this would be a safe-connection if I go somewhere with no WLAN (why not everybody have a WLAN, life would be so easy), so I need the Windows driver too.
Now I only have to find that CD.  It must be in the house somewhere in the box. But where's the box...

Hope I find it, thanks for the info!
