Feedback for RC5
« on: October 24, 2004, 03:36:34 pm »
Hi y'all,

so I just got my first Zaurus (c860) and had to try some ROMs out. I started out with Cacko, jumped to PdaXrom and now I'm back at Cacko. Actually I prefer the RC5. Great ROM !!!

Now some feedback for the developers (maybe to implement
in Kathrin-final ?).

- I only had a 50MB root, therefore I tried to install to my
SD-Card. I formatted it using ext2. Having had problems with
the graphical package manager (errors installing), I switched to
  CLI and changed ipkg.conf to
   dest root /mnt/card
   dest tmpinst /mnt/card/home/tmp/ipkg/inst
(btw. even though I did this change, every start of the package manager
returns the file to its defaults)
after doing an ipkg-link mount /mnt/card I could install without
  errors. But:
   starting xmahjongg:
xmahjongg: relocation error: undefined symbol: __umodsi3
   starting firefox:
      /usr/lib/mozilla-1.6/run-mozilla.sh: line 159: 23253 Bus error  "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
   starting Frozen Bubble:
starts, makes sounds and renders the system unusable. No response
whatsoever except some sound and some animation; had to do a
                ctrl-alt-BS

- the screen shivering on the scrollbar of ATerm drove me nuts

- the system sometimes became unresponsive for upto 30 seconds when
I tried to start an application

- Matchbox-Desktop sometimes took all the CPU-Power by itself

- scrolling the cursor in Scite is difficult since it is
impossible to follow him when holding down the key.

- why did you use Calendar for ctrl and Address for Alt? I think it is
more useful to use the 2 japanese keys on the left of the dash for
  that purpose (like Cacko)

- another wish: please use the font-resizing keys (fn-1 and fn-2) as
well as the light dimmer (fn-3 and fn-4)

- what about implementing the keyhelper-applet like in cacko to
  support for example german umlauts

Greetings,
Karsten

I don't see the problem of having only 50MB root, the applications I tried worked
nicely when installed to /mnt/user which is the "non root" part of the internal flash.
maybe this should go in the FAQ if it is not allready

tarting xmahjongg:

Most probably these apps are not recompiled for RC5 use the apps from the rc5 and unstable feed.

I can see myself having some trouble to do a  C-z or C-x with this setup.
