- gdb not working (i.e. not triggering breakpoints) is a major drawback. I figured this was a known bug and really hope this is fixed by now.

I reported this originally, and from the sounds of it they've got it fixed.

- cross-compiling is way faster but still has annoying bugs. Apart for the usual configure specials that cannot run in x mode, I found out the cc1 frontend to generate x86 asembler instructions occasionally (when building tcpdump I encountered that on quite a few source files). When this happens I have to switch to the native toolchain, and for that rsync will be much helpful.

The cross-compiler should *never* generate x86 instructions.  It must be using the wrong compiler at some stage.  It's not that 'cross compiling' in general has bugs, it's packages that were not written to be portable (ie: do stupid things with the autofoo tools, try to run binaries build in the make process, etc).  Cross-compiling is a bit of an art at times

Personally, I'm really in favor of some of the packages that pdaxrom is using, and the general setup of the rom, but I much prefer openembedded as a build system over ptxdist (which is the base of pdaXrom's build system).  Makes dealing with cross-compilation MUCH easier.

Definitively something I would like to see download and install. No way to debug applications on my Z or on the PC. On PC as on the device, the debug information are not handled correclty by gdb. Only way to fix bugs: browse source code with the eyes

So if someone have a solution, please tells me.

Amrein:  The solution that I used was to use the gdb server (it's already an ipk in the feed iirc).  You need to build gdb for your desktop machine with arm as the 'target' architecture.  Then, copy both the binary you want to debug and its source to your desktop.  Run the gdb server on your zaurus to run the desired binary, then run gdb on your desktop machine and connect to the server (can't remember exact syntax, it's been awhile - check the gdb manpage).

Laze: Glad to know you're hard at work!    Which Christmas were you referring to?  (In other words, are we still going to get a new release for Christmas?)

I have really enjoyed RC5, and like many can't wait for the next release.

Except, of course I'll have to.

But isn't that limbo thing a strange experience? Is there anyone like me who (not being bright enough to develop stuff) is left with a PDA that is almost there, but not quite, so it doesn't get used like perhaps it should?

In contrast, a couple of months ago I got an original Psion netbook off ebay. It is now the mainstay of my business life because it does everything I need my business PDA to do, and it is (I think, but do correct me if I am wrong) a closed book. The software is done, finished. Nothing to do but actually use it. And so much software for it too.

Just by way of contrast with the bleeding edge that is the pdaXrom for the Z, you understand. Now my Z is what I learn Linux on (slowly) and surf the net with when I feel the need to do it without turning on a PC/Mac or anything, and just to have fun. Kind of not-a-PDA. This ring any bells, folks?

Apart from the ramble, I do have a serious question. In my dabbling I have got into trying different window managers. I have tried fluxbox and fvwm. If the next release is after Xmas I shall probably try another. My reason for trying is not idle curiosity, though, as I suffered from the freeze on wake error with RC5 regularly, but not with the other window managers. Is this bug fixed in the forthcoming release? Hope so.

Finally, isn't it great to have a PDA (or whatever) where you know there's still new stuff round the corner?

Yeah, that's pretty much where I am. pdaXrom is really, really neat... but there are certain things that (at least in RC5) are missing, broken, or unreliable enough that I don't actually use my Zaurus nearly as much as I imagined I would when I bought it.

I lack the time - and in many cases, the knowledge - to fix stuff or figure stuff out myself. That leads to desperation and disappointment... all I can do at this point is donate money and hope things get better.

isn't that the day pdaXrom rc6/7 was initially due?

This remindes me of the DevNet days waiting for v3.10 rom for the 5500.

hi all, I'm in need of your opinions: I've got a SL-C860, and have the possibility to sell it to buy a SL-3000.
Laze, how much time do you expect I'll have to wait for a first sl-3000 port?

maybe you won't have the possibility to sell it no more when other roms will be out as everyone will then want a c3000 LOL  ... more seriously it seem that cacko rom is near to hit the 3000 as maslovsky seem to be working on it so maybe on cacko 1.22 ?  (please let me dream as I will receive my c3000 in a few day lol )

Greetings everyone!
In the spirit of Christmas and true fraternal support of our Z- obsessions"let's try and give back a little to what pdaXrom does on merit alone".

I've got my wish list too!  Man, do I hope the next release makes it soon but this isn't a mission critical event in my life and patience will allow a better first release than several patch/fixes down the road.

How many of you know what holiday stress compounded with demanding clients and deadlines are like?  (I think all of you  ) PdaXrom produce and develop to a very fickle crowd, we are a "herd of cats".

A nice budget boost to R&D for pdaXrom will always benefit our wish list and longevity of pdaXroms' work! (win-win)

Merry Christmas everyone.
