Sl-c860 Vs The Sl-6000
« on: December 10, 2004, 11:34:17 pm »
Hi all-
I've decided that its time for a pda again(last one was a sl-5500 that was went missing; what can I say  roommates are great.) Anyway I've finally moved into the lofty postion on Network admin as such I now have a Need for a good PDA (meetings, tapes, log checks, break 'n fix desktop stuff , and 10 suits stopping me in the hall with 10 different tasks each, every time I run to the  pop machine). As such I come begging for advice  on what I should get. I'd like to go with the C860, but wonder is the extra money and time(switching roms for english) worth it? As I left the world of the zauri a while ago I'm not sure what the deal is as far as ipks go now. As in do the ones on feed sites like ww.killefiz.de/zaurus work with the newer hardware or does all software neeed to be compiled/cross compiled to work or are there two different ipk packages?(arm/xscale) what  about  accessories what will and will not work( I read that the 860 will appear like a flash drive in windows can anyone vouch for this?) Does anyone know of working  lan cards or serial connectors? What about the  rom swap for the 860 to english  has anyone done it? Is it a headache? Well I would like to thank anyone who bothered to read this  in advace and either way I'll most likely be back once I get one or the other. Thanks again.
Oh one last question is there a good IRC  channels for Zaurus users ?

you should definitely read the Unofficial Zaurus FAQ and check out the ZUG How-To Docs

The answers to many of your questions all depends on a few more questions.  You ask if the apps on the ZSI (killefiz.de/zaurus) will work... that all depends on the rom you use.  Generally, *many* of the apps there will work on the standard sharp rom on the 860 or 6k.

As far as lan cards and serial connects, check the faq, howto, and search these forums.  Flashing roms are easy, as long as you pay attention to the instructions.

Also, this question of which is better, the 860 or 6k has been asked many times on the forums here... do a little searching, or poke around the model specifc forums (specifically the Cxx0 and 6000 forums) and you'll find the answers you need.
Search the OESF Wiki

Yes. All the ipk's I tried worked on the Sharp ROM (converted to English), but you owe it to yourself to get rid of that and try Cacko. They work there as well, and cacko is much more pleasant to work with.

I only have the wired remote control, but it works fine in Cacko on the 860.

Many WLAN cards work just fine (I just ordered a super-cheap Asus WL-110). Check the forums. There's also a Fast Ethernet CF adapter available. The ZThincable is a working RS232 cable (serial). It's for sale on the maker's website (google), and Amazon US has a Zaurus serial cable.

It's painfully easy as long as you follow the instructions. If you get a Z with the Jap. ROM I wouldn't even botherwith the English translated ROM, just shove Cacko on there. You can swich to an X-based ROM if you feel like messing with it, they definitely are higher-maintenance, though.

I'd like to know that as well, actually. I don't know of any.

Are you deliberately not mentioning #zaurus on irc.freenode.net or did you honestly not know about it?
A number of other channels are present on that net as well (like #cacko, #openzaurus).
