Rc8 Install Instructions
« on: December 26, 2004, 06:34:21 am »
instructions on the pdaxrom site are a bit out of date, so i updated them for an install on a c760, should be easy enough to adapt to your own model.

Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
Make sure the Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
Select option 4 (flash/update).
You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. Back)
press the button on the left with the 'Y' in it
Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.
the pdaxrom installer is launched.
choose option 3 NAND Flash Utils
choose option 3 fix sharp loader NAND 64MB limit (sl-c760/c860 only)
fix is applied, then you reboot
go through options again
chose option 1 resize root partition
enter 121
reboot
choose option 1 install new rom
the rom is flashed
reboot the z
at login prompt, log in as root
then startx
then calibrate the touchscreen
enjoy

I am going to update to RC-8, but you can you tell me if there is any way to avoid all my files installed on / from being erased?  I have made various changes (which I can no longer remember) to various things in /etc, .fvwm, and installed many packages on / that I'd like to avoid re-installing.

I don't think the update affects /home/root, but please tell me if I am wrong.

What do other people do?  Install to the SD card?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What is the sweet spot for Root size on the c700 now with RC8?

Tried 40MB and got a flash RO system error
Tried 47MB and got a mount error on initial boot

Im trying 42MB now and zeroing in on it, but its taking a while   wondering if someone had this info quicker than my flashing (and juggling my two year old).

Just tried RC8, and I really can see some improvement from the last one !

Just one thing: I can't login with ssh on the Zaurus, he asks me for a password for root...

Duh.. Should have tried 45MB, that worked on my C700.  I used to have it set at 40MB before and that was working on 1.0.5.  Thanks for the info!

That's due to a default config security bug that's been fixed.  It's not good practice to allow logins for root when the password is blank.  If you set the root password on your Zaurus (just run 'passwd' in a terminal window) then you'll be able to ssh in using that password.

zonyl -- I think I have 45 on my 700.  I tried various 1.1.0-rcX and 45 was the only
one that seemed to work.  I tried 47, 52, etc.

sriram -- I highly recomment using rsync to rsync the entire pda to another box.

Personally, I rsynced my 760 + 256mb sd... put 1.0.5 rom.zip (the rom it was using)
and the entire feed... onto a sigle 650mb CDR.... burned two copies, etc.
